In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the wisdom of the Christian Mystic Meister Eckhart. He had a distinguished career became a Parisian Professor of Theology and took a leading pastoral and organizational role in the Dominican Order.

In the language of the Christian tradition, Eckhart expounds the eternal mysteries in a style that is fresh and original in the best sense. Through the vividness of his use of imagery,  Eckhart paradoxically directs us to that which lies beyond the image - going beyond the name and form of both Christ and God.

The depth and universality of Eckhart's teaching have drawn seekers of truth to the radical notion of oneness. His radical and penetrating insight makes him an interesting mystic to learn from.

In this episode, I go through the mystical sayings of Meister Eckhart that mainly focus on what religion is and the oneness of Truth, beyond traditions and institutions.

00:01:04.650 --> 00:01:21.801
Last month, if you remember, we looked at the Persian Mystic and Poet Rumi and today we are going to be looking at the German, Christian Mystic, Meister Eckhart and we'll be looking at some of the sayings that he has given, and we'll be contemplating upon those very words.

00:01:21.950 --> 00:01:29.900
The first quote is the eye with which I see God is exactly the same eye with which God sees me.

00:01:30.171 --> 00:01:36.353
My eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowledge and one love.

00:01:36.623 --> 00:01:39.710
This is an incredible non-dual line.

00:01:39.710 --> 00:01:50.028
If you think about it, I mean the whole point of this is really to understand that what is truly seeing what is doing the witnessing, what is doing the watching?

00:01:50.153 --> 00:02:15.717
When we understand our true nature, that it is this Brahman, this Nirguna Brahman, this Eternal Consciousness, which is Pure Awareness, which is the observer of everything and being the observer, it does not get caught up in the experience of day to day life, rather it enriches day to day life because we see reality as it is.

00:02:15.908 --> 00:02:27.368
Now what's interesting about this one line here is that Meister Eckhart is already establishing the eye with which I see God is exactly the same eye with which God sees me.

00:02:27.609 --> 00:02:37.359
This is showing a complete non-dual experience, that now the difference between God and Meister Eckhart has disappeared it's dissolved away.

00:02:37.401 --> 00:02:49.151
And likewise, when we have truly practiced the teachings and we truly start being in that Formless Awareness more and more, this will be the same experience we have.

00:02:49.420 --> 00:02:54.050
The second part of that is my eye and God's eye are one eye.

00:02:54.320 --> 00:02:58.520
Again, establishing there's no such thing as two eyes here, there's this one eye.

00:02:58.760 --> 00:03:00.200
What is this one eye?

00:03:00.471 --> 00:03:01.610
That true vision.

00:03:01.790 --> 00:03:03.140
What is the true vision?

00:03:03.320 --> 00:03:04.640
That Pure Awareness.

00:03:04.737 --> 00:03:20.360
And this is something that has to be emphasized by our mystics, because the interesting thing is the mystics from every tradition has come to the same conclusion that there is only one seeing as Meister Eckhart says one knowledge, knowledge of what?

00:03:20.631 --> 00:03:22.161
The knowledge of what is Real.

00:03:22.431 --> 00:03:22.760
Yeah.

00:03:23.031 --> 00:03:23.860
And one love.

00:03:24.131 --> 00:03:25.450
Again, same thing.

00:03:25.480 --> 00:03:33.360
When there's one love that means that this love that you have cannot be compartmentalized between your likes and dislikes.

00:03:33.691 --> 00:03:42.539
Now that doesn't mean that you do not have likes and dislikes, you do, but that doesn't mean that love cannot exist behind the likes and dislikes.

00:03:42.539 --> 00:03:47.159
This is something that is only understood when you truly, truly practice the teachings.

00:03:47.250 --> 00:04:09.194
When I talk about it, or whenever you hear it, it can be quite difficult to comprehend if you're not putting it into practice, but with teachings like this, of the Mystics, either you experiment with them and then see if they're true or not, or just don't look at them because the thing is if you read it and you just say, oh, this is just, this is just mystical talking.

00:04:09.194 --> 00:04:11.564
This is just mumbo jumbo.

00:04:11.895 --> 00:04:15.495
Then what tends to happen is we then don't practice.

00:04:15.495 --> 00:04:19.932
We close ourselves off and we haven't gone through a good method of testing things out.

00:04:20.069 --> 00:04:36.206
that's why it's really important that whenever you're a seeker of any kind, even if it's to seek the truth in science, medicine, spirituality, religion, whatever it is, whatever truth you seek, the first thing is you have to implement and test it out.

00:04:36.476 --> 00:04:38.187
See if the teaching holds true.

00:04:38.456 --> 00:04:51.117
I feel what Meister Eckhart is saying, I can 100% resonate with and I can a hundred percent say I agree with him that there is only one seeing and there isn't many types of love.

00:04:51.447 --> 00:04:55.646
There's only one type of love here, and that is unconditional love.

00:04:55.916 --> 00:05:00.202
That love that is not only unconditional, but indivisible.

00:05:00.473 --> 00:05:01.668
That's the first quote.

00:05:01.668 --> 00:05:18.357
It's a very short quote, if you feel like you wanna meditate upon, it's a very good prayer and meditation, the eye with which I see God is exactly the same eye with which God sees me, my eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowledge and one love.

00:05:18.627 --> 00:05:36.903
So if you find that you want to just take a quiet moment to just reflect upon that quote, reflect upon that teaching, reflect within and see if you can discover that one eye, that one seeing, that one knowledge, that one love and once you do, everything is completed.

00:05:37.173 --> 00:05:45.954
What's interesting before I continue on is I never usually talk about God and I try to avoid the word'God', as much as possible.

00:05:46.163 --> 00:05:55.668
But today I think I will be using the word God one because of the quotes and two, because I think to explain things, one has to talk about God.

00:05:55.939 --> 00:06:03.178
But when I talk about God, if you've been listening to this podcast for a while, you know that I'm talking about Nirguna Brahman.

00:06:03.449 --> 00:06:11.701
If this is the first time you are listening to the podcast, what I'm talking about when I say God, is this Formless Awareness, it doesn't have a form.

00:06:11.911 --> 00:06:13.646
It's not there high in the heavens.

00:06:13.718 --> 00:06:15.677
It's right here in existence.

00:06:15.762 --> 00:06:19.187
It's Sat, Chit, Ananda, (Existence Consciousness, Bliss).

00:06:19.517 --> 00:06:33.055
The second quote is there is no process of becoming in God, but only a present moment, that is a becoming without becoming, a becoming-new without renewal and that this becoming is God's being.

00:06:33.324 --> 00:06:38.425
There is in God, something so subtle that no renewal can enter there.

00:06:38.694 --> 00:06:49.944
There is something subtle in the soul too that is so Pure and fine that no renewal can enter it either, for all that is in God is an eternal present-time without renewal.

00:06:50.214 --> 00:06:58.112
Very interesting quote, very deep again, something we probably have to break up a little to understand deeply.

00:06:58.197 --> 00:07:01.827
But what he's talking about, there's no process of becoming in God.

00:07:02.098 --> 00:07:06.358
What he's truly saying is there is only God, therefore you cannot become God.

00:07:06.358 --> 00:07:09.177
You cannot become your essential nature, your true nature.

00:07:09.418 --> 00:07:11.307
You already are your true nature.

00:07:11.577 --> 00:07:16.615
All that's going to be happening is, is that you're going to discover that you are your true nature.

00:07:16.615 --> 00:07:18.324
You are this Formless Awareness.

00:07:18.595 --> 00:07:35.456
Now he talks about it being in the present moment, so it's in the complete now and anyone that knows about Eckhart Tolle, I think whose name is inspired from Meister Eckhart, you can see from this quote'but only a present moment' is a teaching that Eckhart Tolle talks about a lot.

00:07:35.497 --> 00:07:36.966
Why in the present moment?

00:07:37.237 --> 00:07:50.422
Because whatever is eternal now in the present moment is eternal forever and to be in this being to be in God's being or to be in this Formless Awareness, to be in that you have to be completely present.

00:07:50.461 --> 00:07:51.932
You have to be in the now.

00:07:52.201 --> 00:07:54.451
You can't be in the past or the future.

00:07:54.721 --> 00:07:58.591
In fact, the past and future is all happening in the now.

00:07:58.673 --> 00:08:02.163
And then there's something about becoming new without renewal.

00:08:02.432 --> 00:08:03.833
What is this becoming new?

00:08:04.103 --> 00:08:19.822
It's just the eradication of the old baggage we have, the old teachings, the old rituals, the old doctrines, the old ideas we had, the old superstitions, all those things are now not there.

00:08:19.973 --> 00:08:23.512
And without renewal, meaning it's an everlasting place.

00:08:23.512 --> 00:08:28.163
It's an ever present moment and being, it's not gonna change in any way.

00:08:28.432 --> 00:08:33.960
The next line is there is in God's something so subtle that no renewal can enter there.

00:08:34.046 --> 00:08:44.500
That means that this subtlety, this essence of the divine, the essence of Brahman, the essence of the Formless Awareness, nothing of renewal, nothing can be changed there.

00:08:44.634 --> 00:08:56.582
If it can be renewed, that means it is changing and therefore it can't be true because it's not Changeless but here, Meister Eckhart is very clear that no renewal can enter here.

00:08:56.852 --> 00:09:04.107
Then he says, there's something subtle in the soul too that is so Pure and fine that no renewal can enter it either.

00:09:04.427 --> 00:09:11.039
I feel there he's talking about the oneness of the soul and God, and they're one and the same, hence they both do not renew.

00:09:11.309 --> 00:09:16.649
Then he says, for all that is in God is an eternal present-time without renewal.

00:09:16.919 --> 00:09:26.370
Again, you could also see this as liberation that once you understand this truth, there's no way you're going to be renewed with another form of any kind.

00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:31.125
Even if you have a renewed form in heaven, even then, that's not true.

00:09:31.395 --> 00:09:35.025
As he says, for all that is in God is an eternal present time.

00:09:35.025 --> 00:09:36.285
It's all in this now.

00:09:36.285 --> 00:09:37.696
It's all right here.

00:09:37.966 --> 00:09:47.336
The moment we step out of the Now, and we go thinking about the past and the future, we lose that, which is eternally present.

00:09:47.605 --> 00:09:47.846
Yeah.

00:09:47.846 --> 00:09:52.350
It's always here and a true realized being understands this.

00:09:52.633 --> 00:10:13.769
The third quote, the Father has only one Son and the less we turn our intention and attention to things other than God and the more we turn to nothing external, all the more shall we be transformed in the Son and all the more shall the Son be born in us and we be born in the Son and become one Son.

00:10:13.885 --> 00:10:19.951
Our Lord Jesus Christ is the sole son of the Father and he alone is both human and divine.

00:10:20.280 --> 00:10:25.321
But there is only a single Son in a single being, which is divine being.

00:10:25.591 --> 00:10:30.270
Thus we become one in him when he is the one object of our attention.

00:10:30.541 --> 00:10:32.520
God always wishes to be alone.

00:10:32.721 --> 00:10:39.148
This is a necessary truth, and it must always be the case that we should have only God, in our thoughts.

00:10:39.217 --> 00:10:44.160
Again, very deep and we have to understand, again, the translator has used the word God.

00:10:44.177 --> 00:10:48.201
And I think the name back then didn't have any baggage that it has today.

00:10:48.471 --> 00:10:55.153
So I want us to put the baggage to the side for a bit when we are reading this, so we can really understand what he says.

00:10:55.153 --> 00:11:07.222
He says here, the Father has only one Son and the less we turn our intention and attention to things other than God and the more we turn to nothing external, the more shall we be transformed in the Son.

00:11:07.239 --> 00:11:09.066
Now, Son, meaning Jesus Christ.

00:11:09.405 --> 00:11:16.600
Now the reason why Jesus is used here is because it shows a human element of what we are and God being that without form.

00:11:16.850 --> 00:11:23.630
We have to bring our intention and attention to God rather than to things other than God.

00:11:23.870 --> 00:11:33.645
So that's constantly having the intention to think about, the Divine, to contemplate on the Formless Awareness, to be in meditation with this Formless Awareness.

00:11:33.696 --> 00:11:37.321
We have to bring our attention and intention to this.

00:11:37.471 --> 00:11:38.551
With what intention?

00:11:38.551 --> 00:11:43.321
To become one, not to worship Jesus or to worship God.

00:11:43.500 --> 00:11:51.631
No, but to become that one thing that we may refer to as God, or even here, we can say Jesus.

00:11:51.659 --> 00:12:02.701
Now it says very clearly that all the more shall we be transformed in the Son and all the more shall the Son be born in us and we be born in the Son and become one Son.

00:12:03.030 --> 00:12:05.370
So it's an eternal play that's going on.

00:12:05.561 --> 00:12:12.609
There is only one Christ, there is only one Being, one Existence, which is this Brahman.

00:12:12.682 --> 00:12:30.379
Now, when we understand that this Brahman is one and the sane as us, we go beyond duality and here again, Meister Eckhart, very smartly, maybe understanding the religious fervor at the time doesn't directly say things, but if you read between the lines, you see where he's coming from.

00:12:30.428 --> 00:12:39.969
He continues on to say that our Lord Jesus Christ is the sole Son of the Father and he alone is both human and divine.

00:12:40.178 --> 00:12:48.813
Again, showing that being human is the best way to get to divinity and it's also showing how it's in our humanity, that we find the divine.

00:12:49.144 --> 00:12:55.288
And the very next line is but there is only a single son in a single being, which is a divine being.

00:12:55.558 --> 00:13:00.982
Again, reemphasizing that there is only one son, which is called Christ.

00:13:01.123 --> 00:13:07.822
And we are all that same son, when we bring our attention and intention towards the Divine.

00:13:08.102 --> 00:13:14.049
When we want to be in the presence of divinity, to be divinity itself that is the key.

00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:20.203
Thus, we become one in him and he is the one object of our attention.

00:13:20.299 --> 00:13:23.629
Once we become one with this, once there is an established oneness.

00:13:23.899 --> 00:13:33.429
When that is the only object of our attention, this divinity, this Brahman, then we become one with him and it's not like we become one with him.

00:13:33.429 --> 00:13:36.789
What we reveal is that there has only been oneness.

00:13:36.888 --> 00:13:38.477
We have only been one with him.

00:13:38.482 --> 00:13:41.514
There's been no twoness, there's been no division.

00:13:41.556 --> 00:13:43.162
There's been no separation.

00:13:43.188 --> 00:13:45.558
So that's what we understand eventually.

00:13:45.649 --> 00:13:50.748
Then Meister Eckhart says a very interesting line that God always wishes to be alone.

00:13:51.018 --> 00:13:54.738
It's an interesting one and you wonder, well, why would God want to be alone?

00:13:55.008 --> 00:14:02.442
And actually the truth is God alone is, or you could say there's only Nirguna Brahman, nothing else.

00:14:02.479 --> 00:14:13.433
I think here Meister Eckhart touches the non-dual peaks and probably doesn't know how it's gonna go with the majority but it's very true that God always wishes to be alone.

00:14:13.644 --> 00:14:35.822
And I think this also has to do with what the pressure that we put upon this idea of God, you know, the fact that we have to keep praying to this God, asking for forgiveness, asking to be in its shelter, to be protected by it, to look out for us, all these things that we put onto this Divine Being when really the Divine Being has invested everything into us.

00:14:36.001 --> 00:14:44.796
And if we only looked within and we actually took a look and we discovered what we had within us, we wouldn't have to go through these issues.

00:14:45.035 --> 00:14:48.306
We'll find that being alone is being God.

00:14:48.365 --> 00:14:51.001
The toughest thing for us to do is to be alone.

00:14:51.001 --> 00:14:53.312
Here he says, God always wishes to be alone.

00:14:53.336 --> 00:14:56.576
In today's day and age, most people fear being alone.

00:14:56.816 --> 00:14:58.285
Why do they fear being alone?

00:14:58.285 --> 00:14:59.846
Because they fear their thoughts.

00:15:00.056 --> 00:15:01.525
Why do they fear their thoughts?

00:15:01.678 --> 00:15:03.688
Because somewhere they fear death.

00:15:03.761 --> 00:15:06.642
Why do they fear death is because they don't know who they are.

00:15:06.698 --> 00:15:08.349
Why do they not know who they are?

00:15:08.548 --> 00:15:10.269
It's because they never searched for it.

00:15:10.538 --> 00:15:12.609
They never really wanted to know who they are.

00:15:12.649 --> 00:15:22.206
Outwardly anyone can look spiritual or religious, but it's actually truly imbibing the message that really matters, that really changes things for us.

00:15:22.475 --> 00:15:28.676
So I think that's a very beautiful line by Meister Eckhart and one that we should definitely contemplate upon.

00:15:28.676 --> 00:15:29.755
Definitely think about.

00:15:29.755 --> 00:15:31.798
Definitely meditate upon that.

00:15:31.828 --> 00:15:33.658
Why would God wish to be alone?

00:15:33.928 --> 00:15:37.198
And why is being alone so important in our spiritual journey?

00:15:37.499 --> 00:15:43.134
I'm not saying that one must go to the forest or the caves and just stay there or go to the Himalayas.

00:15:43.374 --> 00:15:46.734
What I'm saying is you can be alone amongst a crowd.

00:15:47.004 --> 00:15:58.106
What I mean by that is you can be completely one with the divine, while you're in the marketplace, while you're at work, while you're studying, while you're at a function, anything.

00:15:58.376 --> 00:16:01.402
You can be alone yet be with everybody.

00:16:01.719 --> 00:16:04.989
When we say alone, remember, we are not talking about loneliness.

00:16:05.032 --> 00:16:08.961
Loneliness is that emptiness that you feel when you're by yourself.

00:16:09.096 --> 00:16:22.187
Here being alone is when you feel complete in yourself, regardless of whether people are here or not, or whether things are here or not, you are completely comfortable being in, for the lack of a better word, emptiness.

00:16:22.246 --> 00:16:28.359
But what I mean by emptiness is Formless, Imageless, Possession-less, Manifest-less.

00:16:28.629 --> 00:16:29.798
Just this.

00:16:30.068 --> 00:16:34.239
It's a very tough concept but a very beautiful one, if we're able to understand.

00:16:34.291 --> 00:16:40.294
He says, this is a necessary truth and it must always be the case that we should have only God in our thoughts.

00:16:40.451 --> 00:16:48.885
Once we have more thoughts dedicated to the Divine towards higher thoughts and higher concepts, higher ideas.

00:16:49.155 --> 00:16:52.605
We naturally are okay with being alone.

00:16:52.875 --> 00:16:54.586
We naturally feel fulfilled.

00:16:54.826 --> 00:17:00.155
We naturally feel complete, and that is the purpose behind being one.

00:17:00.426 --> 00:17:05.915
As Meister Eckhart in this whole quote really is telling us that there's been only one son.

00:17:06.016 --> 00:17:11.459
Actually the one son is this one God and this one God is what you are and this one son is what you are.

00:17:11.509 --> 00:17:12.469
We are not different.

00:17:12.469 --> 00:17:17.708
We're made up of the same atoms, or we will have a bit of Jesus's atoms within us.

00:17:17.917 --> 00:17:23.587
And if God is the Ground of Being, then that means that God is within everything.

00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:24.900
The fourth quote.

00:17:25.046 --> 00:17:37.779
Therefore a master says, if someone is to perform an inner work, they must draw in all their powers as if in the corner of their soul, hiding from all images and forms, and then they shall be able to act.

00:17:38.079 --> 00:17:44.559
They must thus enter a forgetfulness and an unknowing where this word is to be heard.

00:17:44.829 --> 00:17:46.900
There must be stillness and silence.

00:17:47.170 --> 00:17:52.119
We cannot serve this word better than with silence and stillness.

00:17:52.142 --> 00:18:02.619
There it can be heard and properly understood and there we are in a state of unknowing, where we know nothing, there it reveals itself and makes itself known.

00:18:02.890 --> 00:18:04.630
This is incredibly deep.

00:18:04.700 --> 00:18:16.996
Meister Eckhart without talking about God or anything like that establishes the deepest understanding of our true nature and how to get there and what it's like to be there.

00:18:17.266 --> 00:18:20.799
In one quote, he has explained so much.

00:18:20.868 --> 00:18:27.558
If someone is to perform an inner work, so first of all, everything that we attain in spirituality is within us.

00:18:27.828 --> 00:18:39.798
It's looking within, there's nothing outside that's going to satisfy our journey within because eventually everything that you perceive from outside is already starting from here within.

00:18:40.179 --> 00:18:41.858
So what's the best thing to do?

00:18:42.128 --> 00:18:43.028
Is go within.

00:18:43.101 --> 00:18:49.673
If someone needs to perform an inner work, they must draw in all their powers as if in the corner of the soul.

00:18:49.679 --> 00:18:56.673
you gotta bring your senses in, see if your senses are always being utilized, when are you gonna find peace?

00:18:56.673 --> 00:18:58.742
When are you going to actually have energy?

00:18:59.012 --> 00:19:02.429
Energy is being used when you constantly have to look here and there.

00:19:02.564 --> 00:19:05.116
Then he says hiding from all images and forms.

00:19:05.116 --> 00:19:11.993
Again, suggesting to us that this awareness or this soul does not have any image and does not have any form.

00:19:12.001 --> 00:19:16.364
We know this is true because this Nirguna Brahman is without attribute.

00:19:16.423 --> 00:19:18.993
Without attribute meaning that it is changeless.

00:19:19.128 --> 00:19:24.993
Changeless meaning it has no form or image or neither does it belong to time and space.

00:19:25.213 --> 00:19:27.943
Then he says, And then they shall be able to act.

00:19:28.003 --> 00:19:28.847
Act in what?

00:19:28.907 --> 00:19:40.414
They should be able to fully perform the inner work and then act in the understanding that the inner work is completed and the Formless Awareness is constantly in front of us.

00:19:40.431 --> 00:19:41.641
Constantly there.

00:19:41.911 --> 00:19:45.740
Constantly in our realization in our day to day life.

00:19:46.010 --> 00:19:50.270
Then he says they must thus enter forgetfulness and an unknowing.

00:19:50.270 --> 00:19:51.560
Forgetfulness of what?

00:19:51.830 --> 00:19:52.580
Body and mind.

00:19:52.611 --> 00:19:53.810
I am the body and mind.

00:19:54.080 --> 00:19:58.070
We forget that we are the body and mind because now we entered a higher state.

00:19:58.118 --> 00:20:00.994
These are the lower levels of reality - the body and mind.

00:20:01.265 --> 00:20:06.755
Now we're going to the higher level of reality, which is this Nirguna Brahman, this Pure Awareness.

00:20:06.875 --> 00:20:10.785
And for that, you need to forget your body and mind, especially when you're going within.

00:20:11.055 --> 00:20:15.433
When you enter the state of Samadhi, it is beyond the body and mind.

00:20:15.433 --> 00:20:23.980
Therefore, what Meister Eckhart is wonderfully saying is that there has to be a forgetfulness and there has to be an unknowing.

00:20:24.221 --> 00:20:25.181
Unknowing of what?

00:20:25.451 --> 00:20:28.361
You're not utilizing your mind to know this or that.

00:20:28.395 --> 00:20:32.076
You are just being totally absorbed in the Atman.

00:20:32.346 --> 00:20:36.846
Where this word is to be heard, there must be stillness and silence.

00:20:36.846 --> 00:20:37.986
What is this word?

00:20:38.226 --> 00:20:49.181
In my opinion, this word will be Aum and it's true because when you hear Aum, one, it has arised from silence and takes you to a place of complete stillness within.

00:20:49.451 --> 00:20:56.018
Now the interesting thing is that he also emphasizes there's stillness and silence, and that's also in the mind.

00:20:56.067 --> 00:21:06.008
So for example, you won't be jumping from one thought to another or one desire to another or one emotion and another, what will be happening is you will have silence in your thoughts.

00:21:06.278 --> 00:21:12.913
No thoughts will have a word or have any image of any kind that will constitute as noise.

00:21:12.993 --> 00:21:14.703
There also will be only stillness.

00:21:14.824 --> 00:21:19.144
There will be not moving here or there, there's a complete inner stillness.

00:21:19.249 --> 00:21:31.943
You're completely still, the mind has come to a stand still and is able to absorb that deep wisdom, absorb that deep level of understanding, and then to live in that understanding.

00:21:32.213 --> 00:21:38.304
Then he says, we cannot serve this word better than with stillness and silence.

00:21:38.453 --> 00:21:46.804
Another thing to emphasize is that in the Bible, it is said in John that in the beginning was the word and the word was with God.

00:21:47.044 --> 00:21:49.054
So again, what is this word?

00:21:49.144 --> 00:21:57.894
I think it's that Aum and I would refer to it as Aum because Aum really comes from the soundless sound.

00:21:58.163 --> 00:21:59.574
It's so Pure.

00:21:59.673 --> 00:22:04.834
What he says is we cannot serve this word better than with stillness and silence.

00:22:05.104 --> 00:22:07.894
That you have to be in complete silence.

00:22:08.074 --> 00:22:15.413
You have to be in complete stillness and the best way to be paying your respect to it is by allowing it to be.

00:22:15.683 --> 00:22:22.439
Then he says there, it can be heard and properly understood and there we are in a state of unknowing.

00:22:22.479 --> 00:22:29.663
So it's in that state, we can hear that Aum sound, the word, whatever you may feel the word is.

00:22:29.844 --> 00:22:32.604
At the same time, it's heard and properly understood.

00:22:32.874 --> 00:22:34.253
How is it properly understood?

00:22:34.493 --> 00:22:38.963
You know, that first of all, you have to enter forgetfulness and unknowing.

00:22:39.173 --> 00:22:46.828
So in a way, what has to happen is you have to get rid of all your preconceived notions, your ideas, you have to go beyond memory.

00:22:46.852 --> 00:22:59.333
All these things have to happen and that's in the state of unknowing and that is when we properly understand it and how we also properly understand it is we've grown our discernment to understand what is Real and what is unreal.

00:22:59.542 --> 00:23:11.480
What is real is changeless and if this word, if this soul is truly beyond all images and forms, then that means that it has to be changeless.

00:23:11.775 --> 00:23:18.728
And the last line of that quote is that where we know nothing, there it reveals itself and makes itself known.

00:23:18.778 --> 00:23:20.337
So it's self revealing.

00:23:20.607 --> 00:23:24.175
And again, this is things that are said in the Upanishads as well.

00:23:24.326 --> 00:23:26.695
So it's really good that there is correlation.

00:23:26.782 --> 00:23:31.853
And he says where we know nothing, the wise person is that one that says they know nothing.

00:23:32.123 --> 00:23:33.113
What is nothing?

00:23:33.205 --> 00:23:46.661
We do not know no-thing meaning there is this essence that we talk about, this essential nature, this Formless Awareness has no being, no thing, it cannot be defined in any way.

00:23:46.661 --> 00:23:48.490
It cannot be explained in any way.

00:23:48.513 --> 00:23:51.337
It reveals itself and makes itself known.

00:23:51.387 --> 00:23:54.268
We don't have to put any effort in revealing it.

00:23:54.538 --> 00:24:07.375
All we have to do is unlearn things, unknow things and clean ourselves from any preconceived notions, ideas, concepts, and then we see the truth as it is, as it should be.

00:24:07.645 --> 00:24:08.816
The last quote.

00:24:08.925 --> 00:24:24.076
This cannot be learned by taking flight, that is by fleeing from things and physically withdrawing to a place of solitude, but rather we must learn to maintain an inner solitude regardless of where we are or who we are with.

00:24:24.346 --> 00:24:32.451
We must learn to break through things and to grasp God in them, allowing him to take form in us powerfully and essentially.

00:24:32.511 --> 00:24:51.121
Thus we should be permeated with the sense of a divine presence and be in-formed with a form of our beloved God and be so established in him that we see his presence effortlessly and more than this remain unencumbered by anything, free of all things.

00:24:51.361 --> 00:24:59.770
But this will initially demand of us much application and concentration, as any art does of one who will learn it.

00:24:59.906 --> 00:25:07.507
This cannot be learned by taking flight, that is by fleeing from things and physically withdrawing to a place of solitude.

00:25:07.777 --> 00:25:12.231
We can't just run away to the jungle, to a cave and then get to it.

00:25:12.261 --> 00:25:24.705
No, it has to be done, while we are in the marketplace, while we are in the world, while we are in the concrete jungles of this world, that's where we gotta be and that's where we are gonna find our peace.

00:25:24.717 --> 00:25:29.692
Say if we go to the forest or we go to a cave, that's just an outward solitude, right?

00:25:29.872 --> 00:25:37.652
You're in a situation now where there is little or no distraction but is there really inner solitude?

00:25:37.748 --> 00:25:39.248
Are you truly alone within?

00:25:39.518 --> 00:25:44.557
Have you truly got your mind to be silent and still, so there is no thought?

00:25:44.827 --> 00:25:49.478
No thought meaning that there is now just inner solitude.

00:25:49.538 --> 00:25:55.387
That is what it is meant by inner solitude when there is nothing, but this.

00:25:55.657 --> 00:26:02.607
What he says is, but rather we must learn to maintain an inner solitude regardless of where we are or who we are with.

00:26:02.887 --> 00:26:08.944
Even if you're with someone that you find completely annoying, your inner solitude should remain as it is.

00:26:09.214 --> 00:26:11.015
It shouldn't be disturbed in any way.

00:26:11.045 --> 00:26:13.984
If it is disturbed, that means we haven't got to that place.

00:26:14.255 --> 00:26:19.595
And it doesn't matter if we are around so many people, we don't have to be influenced by them.

00:26:19.625 --> 00:26:24.244
We can be completely strong in ourself because we know who we are and what we are.

00:26:24.355 --> 00:26:28.164
So this is something that we can do, that we can practice.

00:26:28.434 --> 00:26:33.105
Then he says we must learn to break through things and to grasp God in them.

00:26:33.105 --> 00:26:34.724
That's a very beautiful metaphor.

00:26:34.994 --> 00:26:37.214
We must learn to break through things.

00:26:37.278 --> 00:26:38.387
What does it mean by that?

00:26:38.393 --> 00:26:44.127
So when we see something, we must break its form and allow it to show the Formless.

00:26:44.188 --> 00:26:49.948
We should break the image and reveal the imageless, break the color and show the colorless.

00:26:49.948 --> 00:26:55.951
Then it says to grasp God in them, allowing him to take form in us powerfully and essentially.

00:26:56.221 --> 00:27:11.204
Therefore break your own form and allow this truth to be self revealed, allowing this God that once we thought was separate to be in complete oneness with us and therefore it takes our form.

00:27:11.474 --> 00:27:19.498
We see this as it functions in this world and we see It so powerfully and essentially, it is our essential nature.

00:27:19.738 --> 00:27:21.448
It's what makes us powerful.

00:27:21.718 --> 00:27:23.817
Hence, we can be in inner solitude.

00:27:24.087 --> 00:27:29.778
Then it says, thus, we should be permeated with a sense of a divine presence.

00:27:29.917 --> 00:27:34.508
So constantly, we should feel the essence of divinity around us.

00:27:34.567 --> 00:27:41.606
We should feel that Formless around us, this awareness is here, there, everywhere we go.

00:27:41.936 --> 00:27:44.576
No matter what, this presence remains with us.

00:27:44.757 --> 00:27:59.728
When we go to sleep, when we go to work, when we go to school, when we go to college, when we go for a drive, when we go on holiday and vacation, this divine presence is always here, always with us and this is what is being talked about.

00:27:59.998 --> 00:28:02.667
And be in-formed with the forms.

00:28:02.678 --> 00:28:03.577
In-formed.

00:28:03.657 --> 00:28:07.857
Be complete in that nature of our beloved God.

00:28:08.057 --> 00:28:09.538
He says our beloved God.

00:28:09.837 --> 00:28:11.067
Our shared being.

00:28:11.244 --> 00:28:13.555
It's our Formless Awareness.

00:28:13.825 --> 00:28:15.535
It is not just for the clergy.

00:28:15.744 --> 00:28:17.224
It's not just for the priest.

00:28:17.494 --> 00:28:22.029
It's not just for the higher ups in spirituality, the Guru and the sages.

00:28:22.299 --> 00:28:24.640
No, the shared being is everybody's.

00:28:24.970 --> 00:28:26.500
Anyone can access this.

00:28:26.559 --> 00:28:34.359
It doesn't matter what caste you are, what class you are, what race you are, what nationality you are, what gender you are, what sexual preferences you have.

00:28:34.690 --> 00:28:38.079
None of those things matter in this awareness.

00:28:38.349 --> 00:28:49.275
This divine presence can be felt in this, this Formless can be felt in this, this God that is ours belongs to everybody.

00:28:49.545 --> 00:29:02.025
Whenever someone tells you, this is what makes me laugh, that when religions say that this group of people should have less rights or this group of people aren't deserving.

00:29:02.071 --> 00:29:08.221
This group of people are not seen in the same eyes of God, or God does not approve of these people.

00:29:08.258 --> 00:29:12.817
Those people do not understand the 'our beloved God' bit.

00:29:13.087 --> 00:29:16.768
They don't understand how it's our shared being.

00:29:17.038 --> 00:29:21.208
They are so divided, they can never understand the oneness of God.

00:29:21.478 --> 00:29:25.827
So those people are not the ones that we should admire or even look up to.

00:29:26.097 --> 00:29:39.297
The moment any spiritual tradition or religious tradition or secular tradition takes you away from the oneness of being, consider that place to be something to stay away from.

00:29:39.567 --> 00:29:55.896
If something creates a separateness in you, a division in you and others because of the categories, in which they describe themselves, stay away from that tradition because only oneness is accepted in this and oneness is the only experience in this.

00:29:56.166 --> 00:30:01.027
Be so established in him that we see his presence effortlessly.

00:30:01.297 --> 00:30:04.507
We don't have to put any effort in, it just happens.

00:30:04.777 --> 00:30:09.571
It's as natural as breathing, you don't consciously have to keep breathing throughout the day.

00:30:09.842 --> 00:30:11.457
It's automatically happening.

00:30:11.507 --> 00:30:25.432
Likewise, this presence you can see, perceive, feel, experience effortlessly, and this can be done when you witness others, when you see others in that oneness.

00:30:25.702 --> 00:30:30.771
And then he says, and more than this remain unencumbered by anything.

00:30:31.041 --> 00:30:33.892
So do not be burdened by anything.

00:30:34.162 --> 00:30:40.031
Do not have the baggage of anything meaning the baggage of tradition, the baggage of culture.

00:30:40.122 --> 00:30:41.471
You don't need those things.

00:30:41.652 --> 00:30:43.511
That has nothing to do with spirituality.

00:30:43.662 --> 00:30:46.932
Those are nice additions maybe, but you don't need them.

00:30:46.991 --> 00:30:47.981
They're not essential.

00:30:48.251 --> 00:30:49.392
They're not necessary.

00:30:49.662 --> 00:30:52.991
What you can say is they're the non-essentials.

00:30:53.261 --> 00:30:56.711
The essential is just being Formless Awareness.

00:30:56.981 --> 00:30:58.461
So free of all things.

00:30:58.791 --> 00:30:59.511
Be free.

00:30:59.781 --> 00:31:03.448
Don't take anything that will be a burden upon you.

00:31:03.718 --> 00:31:07.557
Meaning a burden upon your spiritual journey, your spiritual pursuit.

00:31:07.827 --> 00:31:09.238
That is what is being meant here.

00:31:09.508 --> 00:31:18.833
And then the final line, but this will initially demand of us much application and concentration as any art does of one who will learn it.

00:31:18.880 --> 00:31:38.002
As we know, whenever we learn an instrument or we have to learn writing or learn editing or recording, any art, anything we do, even a degree of computer science or engineering or medicine, anything we need to put our complete attention and focus on it.

00:31:38.272 --> 00:31:45.772
We must apply those things and therefore the more we apply, the more we concentrate, the better we get at that skill.

00:31:45.826 --> 00:31:56.855
If we are to improve our spirituality, if we are to go further, we have to be completely committed to applying the teachings and concentrating on the teachings.

00:31:57.036 --> 00:32:10.648
So today, whatever we've learned from Meister Eckhart, it's not just about, you know, me talking about it and then editing, listening to it and then going off and doing whatever I please, no, I have to really work on this.

00:32:10.690 --> 00:32:16.700
I have to look within myself and say, do I experience the presence of this Formless Awareness effortlessly?

00:32:16.970 --> 00:32:18.529
If not, what can I do?

00:32:18.799 --> 00:32:27.640
Maybe I need to keep trying more in the day, be aware of this Formless Awareness, this presence, and the more I can, the better.

00:32:27.910 --> 00:32:46.152
I will conclude here is that these are very great words by Meister Eckhart and one that needs us to really focus upon, really think about, and if we've learned anything today, it's about applying the teachings, applying that oneness within.

00:32:46.422 --> 00:32:57.075
And really, I pray with this in the nature of the Christian tradition, I pray that we all understand our true nature and we understand what we truly are.

00:32:57.159 --> 00:33:19.588
That really there is a oneness between us and the one that reveals the truth, our Guru, our teacher, and in that oneness, what is also established is the oneness of what we may refer to as God or Nirguna Brahman or this Formless Awareness and that is the end of the episode.
