Diving into the profound teachings of the Vedanta Sara, we explore the fundamental nature of consciousness as the indivisible, eternal reality that forms the basis of all existence.

• Understanding our highest desire is not temporary pleasures but jivan mukti - liberation while alive
• The Self is described as indivisible, eternal, conscious, and blissful
• Non-duality means there is no separation between "me" and Brahman
• Consciousness is beyond time - past, present, and future
• Our ability to contemplate existence comes from consciousness itself
• True bliss is permanent and beyond sensory gratification
• The ultimate truth is beyond the reach of speech and mind
• Awareness itself is the only direct path to realization
• The importance of a Guru who can show us our true nature
• This series provides the foundation for deeper exploration of formless awareness

00:00:46.012 --> 00:01:02.749
So, as we begin the Vedanta Sara, it is very important for us to just do a quick recap on yesterday's episode, that it's all about having the basic understanding.

00:01:02.749 --> 00:01:05.974
With the basic understanding, we can move forward.

00:01:05.974 --> 00:01:23.114
We can understand the deeper aspects of the truth when it comes to the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and also the Bhagavad Gita and, as I mentioned, those in that list order, in the order of the list.

00:01:23.114 --> 00:01:25.027
That's the way we should study.

00:01:25.027 --> 00:01:35.019
So and it makes sense because if we have the basics correct, we can understand everything else very easily.

00:01:35.019 --> 00:01:46.233
Now, um, we'll start with the first verse, and that is, he says, for the fulfillment of my highest desire.

00:01:46.233 --> 00:01:57.381
I take refuge in the self, the basis of all existence, indivisible, eternal, conscious, blissful and beyond the reach of speech and mind.

00:01:57.381 --> 00:02:05.055
So if you think about it, the whole, the whole of spirituality is in that one verse itself.

00:02:05.055 --> 00:02:10.009
First he says for the fulfillment of my highest desire.

00:02:10.009 --> 00:02:11.806
Now, what would be our highest desire?

00:02:11.806 --> 00:02:21.634
Now, see, many of us, we desire a better car, a better home, a better job, a better college education, better grades.

00:02:21.634 --> 00:02:27.192
We're constantly wanting something that is temporary of this world.

00:02:27.192 --> 00:02:38.268
But the fulfillment of my highest desire would mean that it's about transcending those desires that have an end point, like their happiness has an end point.

00:02:38.268 --> 00:02:42.822
So what would be fulfilling as a desire now?

00:02:42.822 --> 00:02:55.013
That would be to understand one's true nature, or jivan mukti, to be liberated while alive, to be free from suffering, to be free from all notions of body and mind identification.

00:02:55.013 --> 00:02:59.310
So this is why he says I take refuge in the self.

00:02:59.460 --> 00:03:08.586
Now, it's not some separate self that he's talking about, it's not about the true self, our true nature, this Atman, this Brahman, this formless awareness.

00:03:08.586 --> 00:03:12.193
That's what Sadananda Ji is talking about.

00:03:12.193 --> 00:03:15.844
And then he says it's the basis of all existence.

00:03:15.844 --> 00:03:21.442
See, for existence to arise, this formless awareness has to be.

00:03:21.442 --> 00:03:22.784
This Brahman has to be.

00:03:22.784 --> 00:03:26.233
It is the cause behind everything.

00:03:26.233 --> 00:03:34.074
So if there is creation, that power of Maya, it emanates from Brahman.

00:03:34.074 --> 00:03:37.610
So this whole world is nothing but an extension of Brahman.

00:03:37.610 --> 00:03:57.468
It's not Brahman itself, it doesn't stand by itself, because it's a projection, it's an appearance, but we can understand that its power, its cause, comes from the ultimate.

00:03:57.468 --> 00:04:01.033
Now, then it describes the ultimate.

00:04:01.033 --> 00:04:02.760
So you know when we may think.

00:04:02.901 --> 00:04:06.526
Well, if you're saying it's the basis of all existence, well, is it in duality?

00:04:06.526 --> 00:04:08.631
No, first word indivisible.

00:04:08.631 --> 00:04:09.752
It cannot be divided.

00:04:09.752 --> 00:04:11.901
Therefore, it can be multiplied.

00:04:11.901 --> 00:04:17.610
Yeah, so it's all the play of the one that appears to be many.

00:04:17.610 --> 00:04:27.334
Yeah, that's the way to understand this pure consciousness, this formless awareness that we are Now.

00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:52.389
See, the point is here that if anybody had to ask you Well, what is this truth, what is Shiva, what is Brahman, what is the Atman, what is Nirakar, what is Vaiguru, what is God, one should have the answer at the tip of their tongue, because it's your very nature.

00:04:52.389 --> 00:05:04.511
And if one hasn't got there, then we obviously have work to do in spirituality, and it's important for us to acknowledge that we have work to do in terms of spiritual practice and spiritual understanding.

00:05:04.511 --> 00:05:08.463
So that's one thing.

00:05:08.463 --> 00:05:14.382
So when we say indivisible, then that means that there is a oneness between the.

00:05:14.382 --> 00:05:18.728
There's only oneness here, yeah, there's no two.

00:05:18.728 --> 00:05:21.072
Yeah, there's no duality.

00:05:21.072 --> 00:05:23.966
There's not me and brumman, there's not me, the self and the.

00:05:23.966 --> 00:05:26.459
There's not me, the self and the higher self.

00:05:26.459 --> 00:05:27.886
There is only the higher self.

00:05:27.886 --> 00:05:36.906
There's an appearance of a limited self, but I only know it's limited because of that avidya, that ignorance being removed.

00:05:36.906 --> 00:05:42.069
Without that ignorance being removed, I will think there's a little me and there's a big God.

00:05:42.069 --> 00:05:45.726
Yeah, and I'll be in that little duality.

00:05:45.726 --> 00:05:47.992
So it's indivisible.

00:05:47.992 --> 00:05:55.370
So, even if one tries to separate themselves from this God, from this Brahman, it's impossible.

00:05:55.370 --> 00:06:07.673
That's why the non-dual truth is the most common sense kind of reality that one can acknowledge.

00:06:08.964 --> 00:06:14.459
To say that it's, it can be divided, it's dualistic.

00:06:14.459 --> 00:06:20.250
That means we have not understood the nature of consciousness, the nature of our true self.

00:06:20.250 --> 00:06:26.980
That means that we see ourselves separate to other people, to other things, things even to consciousness itself.

00:06:26.980 --> 00:06:29.767
That there's a me and there's the awareness of me.

00:06:29.767 --> 00:06:36.247
No, there is only awareness, this me that we're talking about, this body and mind.

00:06:36.829 --> 00:06:40.663
Will it, will the awareness remain in the body after physical death?

00:06:40.663 --> 00:06:40.903
No, it won't.

00:06:40.903 --> 00:06:41.343
So it only remains.

00:06:41.343 --> 00:06:42.627
It remains regardless of physical death no, it won't.

00:06:42.627 --> 00:06:44.449
So it only remains.

00:06:44.449 --> 00:06:51.865
It remains regardless of physical death or physical birth or non-physicality.

00:06:51.865 --> 00:06:57.475
And this is where we understand it's indivisible, then eternal.

00:06:57.475 --> 00:07:00.567
Likewise, it's beyond birth and beyond death.

00:07:00.567 --> 00:07:02.992
It's here, forever, forever.

00:07:02.992 --> 00:07:12.201
There's never been a time and this pure awareness, you know, there's never been a time where it hasn't been, and there never will be a time, and it won't be there.

00:07:12.201 --> 00:07:15.447
This pure consciousness will remain eternal.

00:07:15.447 --> 00:07:27.312
It will remain here because if it's indivisible, then it doesn't belong to time and space and therefore we can understand its true nature that is eternal.

00:07:27.312 --> 00:07:36.091
So again, we know that its nature is beyond time, so it's beyond the past, present and future.

00:07:36.091 --> 00:07:55.572
So, for example, the teaching of just being in the now is not complete, because we have to even transcend the now, because if you investigated the now, you wouldn't be able to keep up with it from a mental point of view, from a mind point of view.

00:07:55.572 --> 00:07:59.964
Whenever you say this is now, the now has escaped.

00:07:59.964 --> 00:08:09.288
So that's why it's better to say it's eternal and then in that everything is said yeah, past, present and future.

00:08:09.927 --> 00:08:11.139
Conscious, aware.

00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:15.540
That's the direct way of us knowing.

00:08:15.540 --> 00:08:30.449
The direct realization is through awareness that I'm aware of ignorance, this ignorance that doesn't exist, this ignorance that is just an appearance, that's a projecting power and veils this Brahman.

00:08:30.449 --> 00:08:35.948
But once I address this avidya, once I address this ignorance, it goes away.

00:08:35.948 --> 00:08:52.288
And that only happens through the direct path of awareness that, once I realize, this awareness is formless, it's alive within me right now and it will remain even after this physical death.

00:08:52.288 --> 00:08:59.966
So its nature is conscious, its nature is awareness and that's how we directly experience it in this human frame.

00:08:59.966 --> 00:09:11.625
Now, that doesn't mean that the human frame is dependent on this awareness, or awareness is dependent on this human frame, shall I say.

00:09:11.625 --> 00:09:19.346
Actually, this human frame can function because of consciousness.

00:09:19.785 --> 00:09:20.427
Think about it.

00:09:20.427 --> 00:09:37.964
If we weren't conscious beings, we weren't aware of ourselves, we will not be asking about the meaning of life, we will not be wondering about if there is life beyond the stars, we will not be thinking about if there is more when we die.

00:09:37.964 --> 00:09:44.380
That means there's a certain awareness of, even after death, that there must be something after death.

00:09:44.380 --> 00:09:46.240
What is speaking that?

00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:47.299
It is awareness.

00:09:47.299 --> 00:09:49.301
It's not the body that's saying it.

00:09:49.301 --> 00:09:50.860
The body knows it's going to be inert.

00:09:50.860 --> 00:09:58.754
The mind knows something, travels, and that's what we learn in Advaita Vedanta.

00:09:58.754 --> 00:10:00.975
We may get to this in Vedanta.

00:10:01.681 --> 00:10:03.254
It's blissful, it's happiness.

00:10:03.254 --> 00:10:06.765
It has nothing more to give to us.

00:10:06.765 --> 00:10:08.662
It's got nothing less to give to us.

00:10:08.662 --> 00:10:12.623
It's happy, happy, as I always say.

00:10:13.043 --> 00:10:19.966
What my guru used to say is that bliss is the is true happiness beyond the senses, see, sense.

00:10:19.966 --> 00:10:27.566
Gratification can only give us a certain amount of happiness, a certain amount of joy, a certain amount of peace.

00:10:27.566 --> 00:10:33.149
But to be in blissfulness is something that's available 24-7.

00:10:33.149 --> 00:10:36.019
And you experience it right here, right now.

00:10:36.019 --> 00:10:42.244
It's beyond time, it's not that you have to access bliss.

00:10:42.244 --> 00:10:44.283
Bliss is always here.

00:10:44.283 --> 00:10:52.422
It's inexhaustible, just like this consciousness, just like this Brahman, and it's permanent.

00:10:54.876 --> 00:11:15.467
All these attributes that have been mentioned is permanence, indivisible permanence, eternal permanence, conscious awareness permanence, blissful permanence, awareness permanence, blissful permanence.

00:11:15.467 --> 00:11:17.369
And do we really want this happiness beyond the senses?

00:11:17.369 --> 00:11:19.370
Do we really want to experience it?

00:11:19.370 --> 00:11:38.006
Do we really want to be in that state where there's only peace, where there's not even a flicker of thought, a flicker of imagination, a flicker of even a vritti, a movement of a thought, not even the thought fully developed, even the movement in between the development of a thought even then?

00:11:38.006 --> 00:11:52.230
So bliss is beyond all this and that's why, in the final line he says, and beyond the reach of speech and mind.

00:11:52.230 --> 00:11:55.264
See, the speech can only reach you there.

00:11:55.264 --> 00:11:58.264
The mind can only take you so far.

00:11:58.264 --> 00:12:00.562
Even the speech can only take you so far.

00:12:01.414 --> 00:12:01.976
What I say.

00:12:01.976 --> 00:12:07.124
There will be a limitation, because this truth is a paradox in itself.

00:12:07.124 --> 00:12:09.542
If I say it's far, it's also near.

00:12:09.542 --> 00:12:11.080
If I say it's fast, it's also slow.

00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:12.145
If I say it's fast, it's also slow.

00:12:12.145 --> 00:12:27.169
If I say it moves, it's also still so it's beyond the reach of speech and mind.

00:12:27.169 --> 00:12:28.991
The mind cannot reach it.

00:12:28.991 --> 00:12:37.317
A mind, the mind cannot reach it.

00:12:37.317 --> 00:12:40.724
It can try, it can get a hint, a fragrance, but it cannot get to the flower, the source of that fragrance.

00:12:40.724 --> 00:12:43.515
Only awareness can get to the source of that fragrance.

00:12:43.515 --> 00:12:50.567
So awareness is the only one that can take you there.

00:12:50.567 --> 00:12:51.629
You'll get the hint.

00:12:51.629 --> 00:12:57.663
The mind will be able to somewhat translate, but something always gets lost in translation.

00:12:57.663 --> 00:13:02.783
Funny enough, I'm reading a translation.

00:13:04.876 --> 00:13:06.462
But this truth can be heard.

00:13:06.462 --> 00:13:21.837
Yes, it can be heard in the silence of meditation, when the mind is silent, when the surrounding is silent.

00:13:21.837 --> 00:13:24.279
It's experienced.

00:13:24.279 --> 00:13:29.565
We just have to be open to that.

00:13:29.565 --> 00:13:54.860
And this awareness itself carries the complete understanding, as long as we are not just physically listening, like you're just watching this.

00:13:54.860 --> 00:14:10.424
No, if we take it deeper into the mind and thought and then take it deeper into the contact with awareness, then slowly and slowly, awareness will erode away the ignorance of the notion that we're the body and mind.

00:14:12.575 --> 00:14:18.418
So this is what happens when we go beyond speech, beyond mind, it cannot.

00:14:18.418 --> 00:14:35.866
We can again, like, for example, when I say indivisible, when we say eternal these are things that are experienced, but the word doesn't get close to what is being experienced.

00:14:35.866 --> 00:14:44.677
And that's something you have to intuitively grasp.

00:14:44.677 --> 00:14:58.452
And if you've, you know, stayed with the Brahmgyana, stayed with the knowledge of Brahma and the knowledge of truth, if you stayed with it, if you have immersed in it, then it will become very.

00:14:58.452 --> 00:15:01.114
You can grasp what I'm saying instantaneously.

00:15:01.114 --> 00:15:11.846
But if you haven't and your mind is still doubting it, that means it's good, that means there's some doubt, there's something working, there's recognition that this could be the truth.

00:15:11.846 --> 00:15:19.248
So there's doubts that arise, and then there may be that, oh, I'm just listening and therefore it just stays there.

00:15:19.248 --> 00:15:25.239
I hear it, and then I'm off to chasing the other desire that I have.

00:15:25.586 --> 00:15:31.818
So initially we've got to understand that what he's describing here has to be our state too.

00:15:31.818 --> 00:15:36.336
So when we read this text, we've got to read it in that sense.

00:15:36.336 --> 00:15:45.951
So when I read it, I've got to understand that it's coming from the highest for the fulfillment of my highest desire.

00:15:45.951 --> 00:15:48.317
First Jiva Mukti that will be in my mind.

00:15:48.317 --> 00:15:50.951
Then I'm taking refuge in the self.

00:15:50.951 --> 00:16:02.894
So when I read this, I'm reading it as being in the shelter of the self, in the shelter of formless awareness, in the shelter of Brahman Nirakad, and then knowing that it's the basis of all existence.

00:16:02.894 --> 00:16:10.115
So one is not reading from ignorance, one is actually reading from knowledge, from true vidya.

00:16:10.115 --> 00:16:37.937
Yeah, then he says After worshipping the Guru who, both by name and by his state of being free from the illusion of duality or appearance of duality, embodies the essence of his name, adv of all.

00:16:37.998 --> 00:16:40.860
He says after worshipping the Guru, where do you get the knowledge from?

00:16:40.860 --> 00:16:42.341
It's from the Guru.

00:16:42.341 --> 00:16:48.197
People think today that they can bypass the Guru, they don't need a Guru.

00:16:48.197 --> 00:16:54.230
They listen to one lecture of J Krishnamurti who says do not have a Guru.

00:16:54.230 --> 00:16:57.149
But then he himself is teaching.

00:16:57.149 --> 00:17:02.994
But what he's saying is don't give up your authority on the truth.

00:17:02.994 --> 00:17:05.891
That's all he's saying.

00:17:05.891 --> 00:17:09.071
That if the Guru has achieved good.

00:17:09.071 --> 00:17:11.151
But have you achieved.

00:17:11.151 --> 00:17:14.491
This is the important thing.

00:17:15.724 --> 00:17:18.869
So, after worshipping the Guru, so what does the worship mean?

00:17:18.869 --> 00:17:54.805
It's a gratitude, A gratitude for the wisdom of this indivisible, eternal, conscious and blissful Brahman, self, atman, formless Awareness, god, whatever name we want to give, who, both by name and by his state of being free from the appearance of duality, he is both by name and by his state of being free from the appearance of duality.

00:17:54.805 --> 00:17:56.471
He is beyond duality.

00:17:56.471 --> 00:18:07.631
He knows that this appearance that we see, this Maya, it appears to be dualistic, but actually, remember, it's what the basis of all existence is Brahman.

00:18:07.631 --> 00:18:17.259
So, regardless of these names and states, it's all that, one indivisible Brahman.

00:18:17.259 --> 00:18:28.864
And he embodies the essence of his name, advaya Ananda, essence of his name Advaya Ananda.

00:18:28.864 --> 00:18:37.673
So the name of his Guru means that this reality is non-dual in nature.

00:18:37.673 --> 00:18:41.558
So he says I proceed to describe the essence of Vedanta, according to my understanding.

00:18:41.558 --> 00:18:46.127
So he would now describe Vedanta.

00:18:46.127 --> 00:18:48.214
So the main important thing is to understand that.

00:18:50.147 --> 00:18:51.894
You know, there's a power in names too.

00:18:51.894 --> 00:19:01.614
You know, I remember, and there's a suggestion too, like, for example, I remember my uncle.

00:19:01.614 --> 00:19:02.924
He was my first role model.

00:19:02.924 --> 00:19:25.515
If you watch my video about my spiritual journey, I mentioned this, I mentioned about him and he said that he would tell me that, you know, rahul was the name of Mahatma Buddha's son, so Gautama Buddha, his son.

00:19:25.515 --> 00:19:36.127
And I used to think, oh wow, you know that's what my name means.

00:19:36.127 --> 00:19:38.615
You know, I'm the son of Buddha.

00:19:38.615 --> 00:19:45.676
Now, with that means that you have to live up to the name.

00:19:45.676 --> 00:19:57.675
And it's interesting, I don't know whether my uncle had that intention, but it became a journey for me to realize what spirituality is.

00:19:57.675 --> 00:20:06.131
So, you know, one has to embody the essence of the name too, if you have a meaning to your name.

00:20:08.596 --> 00:20:13.694
But remember, and by his state of being free from the appearance of duality.

00:20:13.694 --> 00:20:19.592
So one thing we need to understand here is that we do not get stuck in the appearance of duality.

00:20:19.592 --> 00:20:20.915
We are free from it.

00:20:20.915 --> 00:20:25.298
We know it's dualistic, we know that it's not the complete truth.

00:20:25.298 --> 00:20:28.307
Its fragmentation means that it's not.

00:20:28.307 --> 00:20:33.137
It shows us a different, the senses are showing us something different.

00:20:33.137 --> 00:20:43.671
When we know that the truth is indivisible, then we understand that this duality is just an appearance and even the basis of this.

00:20:43.671 --> 00:20:51.394
Even for the duality to exist, it has to come from the indivisible one, because that is the basis of all existence.

00:20:51.394 --> 00:21:01.068
So, really, at the end of these two verses and then we'll obviously in the next episode on the Vedanta Sara, we will go into the other verses.

00:21:02.550 --> 00:21:13.556
But what we need to understand is this truth is beyond speech and beyond the reach of the mind.

00:21:13.556 --> 00:21:18.672
So when you're reading this, when you're listening to this, do not think from those aspects.

00:21:18.672 --> 00:21:29.710
Use those aspects only if you don't want to have the direct understanding of the truth, aspects, only if you don't want to have the direct understanding of the truth.

00:21:29.710 --> 00:21:42.354
But in this first verse itself there is the direct truth there revealed, and then in the next one, just remember that only that person who understands the reality can the reality.

00:21:42.974 --> 00:21:52.155
Many people may talk about God realization, being enlightened, but how many of them can take you to your true nature Directly?

00:21:52.565 --> 00:21:54.953
How many of them can take you to formless awareness?

00:21:54.953 --> 00:22:02.272
How many of them have even given you a glimpse Forget about Anything else Just a glimpse of this formless awareness?

00:22:02.272 --> 00:22:18.309
Only those teachers are true who can show you this truth, who can show you this reality, who can highlight this reality for you, to show you that it's right here in front of you, it's not anywhere, far.

00:22:18.309 --> 00:22:39.800
We all have the strength to do that and if we follow the teacher's instructions, we can get there, and so take this Vedanta Sara series to be an important base for what we'll be doing in the course.

00:22:39.800 --> 00:22:44.676
If we have a good understanding of this, the course will be a lot easier for us.

00:22:44.676 --> 00:22:47.614
We will understand this a lot more straight away.

00:22:47.614 --> 00:22:51.575
But that's up to you.

00:22:51.575 --> 00:23:12.420
But this Resting in Formless Awareness course, again, it's for really hardcore, I would say, real seekers for truth, seekers for Truth, and this Vedanta Sāras series is just helping us to navigate the course a little easier.

00:23:20.785 --> 00:23:23.108
Okay, so we'll carry on next time with verse 3 at least.

00:23:23.108 --> 00:23:36.375
And, uh, I hope that after this episode, if somebody asked you what is consciousness, what is brahman, what is the atman, what is god, you should have the answer.

00:23:36.375 --> 00:23:47.330
Okay, take care everyone, remember to like, comment and subscribe, and do follow me on Discord where we can continue the conversation.

00:23:47.330 --> 00:23:49.673
Take care, everyone, namaste.
