00:00:28.545 --> 00:00:32.758
We're continuing on with our thoughts on the Bhagavad Gita Verse 49.
00:00:32.927 --> 00:00:38.688
Listen, Arjuna, buddhi yoga is greatly superior to mere material actions.
00:00:38.844 --> 00:00:43.734
Take refuge in loving surrender to the wise discernment of the buddhi faculty.
00:00:43.902 --> 00:00:56.526
Those whose karmas are only based on the on the logic of obtaining the fruits of material action are selfish and become miserly beings clinging to inert matter.
00:00:56.634 --> 00:00:59.554
Let's begin with the first line.
00:00:59.746 --> 00:01:05.793
Listen Arjuna, buddhi-yoga is greatly superior to mere material actions.
00:01:05.947 --> 00:01:09.400
The yoga of wisdom is superior and the most important.
00:01:09.400 --> 00:01:11.740
This is what we know from what buddhi-yoga means.
00:01:11.921 --> 00:01:17.350
That it is the yoga of wisdom, the yoga of knowing what is real and unreal.
00:01:17.570 --> 00:01:25.531
The simple reason for this is that it is wisdom that defines how we live and what actions we do and what intentions we have.
00:01:25.891 --> 00:01:30.772
Remember with wisdom and with that discernment we know how to act in the world.
00:01:31.012 --> 00:01:32.662
We know how to be in the world.
00:01:32.871 --> 00:01:40.191
We know what to think in the world, and we know how to be above the world at the same time, all this can happen simultaneously.
00:01:40.581 --> 00:01:48.111
If we are able to truly imbibe the message that's being given by Shri Krishna in, this second chapter itself.
00:01:48.308 --> 00:01:52.478
By utilizing our wisdom, we perform actions with discernment.
00:01:52.778 --> 00:01:54.828
As we can check what is going on.
00:01:55.036 --> 00:02:07.274
By utilizing our wisdom, we perform actions with discernment, as we can check what action is going to lead to happiness and joy, or that causes the least amount of harm.
00:02:07.754 --> 00:02:24.676
This is the important thing to recognize is that when we utilize our wisdom and we utilize the knowledge that we've been given and we then perform actions, in line with that wisdom, that action is most likely going to lead to happiness.
00:02:24.864 --> 00:02:33.653
It's most likely going to lead to joy, towards success, towards more serenity, towards more tranquility and peace.
00:02:33.943 --> 00:02:38.834
But say it's an action which could lead to some level of harm.
00:02:39.092 --> 00:02:50.739
It will be that action will be the one that causes the least amount of harm compared to another type of action that is done without the wisdom faculty, without the wisdom utilized.
00:02:51.188 --> 00:02:54.098
So this is something we need to also understand.
00:02:54.256 --> 00:02:59.818
Every action that is done with the buddhi has the potential to always be transformative.
00:03:00.209 --> 00:03:05.015
Whatever is done, in that wisdom will always cause a transformation.
00:03:05.286 --> 00:03:11.286
It will always be one that transforms a situation or transforms a person's life.
00:03:11.419 --> 00:03:19.218
This is why it is important and imperative for us to always utilize the wisdom that's been given by the sages and saints.
00:03:19.459 --> 00:03:26.072
What we've learned here from Shri Krishna and also to our gurus that we adhere to, that we follow.
00:03:26.197 --> 00:03:33.037
Also with buddhi-yoga, the path is focused on liberation and on Brahman, which makes it eternal.
00:03:33.217 --> 00:03:36.007
In the future verses this would be made more clear.
00:03:36.116 --> 00:03:50.362
When we focus on liberation, we're focusing on an action, which will have an eternal consequence, therefore we want that eternal consequence to be one of fruitfulness, one of beauty, one of happiness.
00:03:50.503 --> 00:03:54.014
That's why it's really important to act from that place of wisdom.
00:03:54.086 --> 00:04:06.915
Being in Yoga, in union with Brahman, with the Atman, we can have that mental calmness, that equanimity, which allows one to transcend the results of one's actions.
00:04:07.126 --> 00:04:14.216
That even if this action that we've given is one that's going to help the world tenfold or a thousand fold.
00:04:14.485 --> 00:04:23.654
Even then we do not ask for any reward apart from the fact that we can continue to act in such a manner, if there is going to be a reward.
00:04:24.355 --> 00:04:25.920
That's what we would like to ask for.
00:04:26.033 --> 00:04:39.052
We would like to ask that the wisdom we've been given that it's never forgotten, this is how we need to be Mere material actions can be perceived as actions that are done just for material gain, like pleasure and power.
00:04:39.322 --> 00:05:01.338
As Shri Krishna has established earlier, if all we're going to be doing is actions based upon our ego based upon the false identification that we are this body and this mind, then we're only can be looking for material gain, like pleasure, power, and then success, name and fame, that's all we would be attaching ourselves to.
00:05:01.517 --> 00:05:07.194
And rituals, although they may focus us on the divine, it is mainly done for some material gain.
00:05:07.644 --> 00:05:15.954
There is an attachment to the results, it's normally based on this changing material reality, that's all we are looking for.
00:05:16.225 --> 00:05:23.514
If you're looking to do a religious ritual, it's so that we may get a better house or there be peace in the house.
00:05:23.814 --> 00:05:27.925
But the people that provide the peace is yourself is myself.
00:05:28.165 --> 00:05:30.204
We have to be responsible for that.
00:05:30.384 --> 00:05:36.084
No astrology can help you, no mantra will help you no ritual will help you.
00:05:36.237 --> 00:05:42.067
You still have to face the situation and yes, if you really believe in it, it may help the situation.
00:05:42.367 --> 00:05:51.538
But actually it's more that when you know that there's been a ritual done, it actually creates an idea in your mind that you can now go through this.
00:05:51.538 --> 00:05:55.435
You can now go through that problem and not face big consequences.
00:05:55.588 --> 00:05:57.387
But again, this is based on fear.
00:05:57.545 --> 00:06:02.194
This is based on the mind, on the body, the attachment to those things.
00:06:02.555 --> 00:06:06.788
So this is why shri Krishna doesn't want us to be attached to these things.
00:06:06.954 --> 00:06:13.665
He would rather that we focus on Brahman the Atman, the Self and the Self is always available to us.
00:06:13.923 --> 00:06:17.132
This self is changeless, therefore eternal.
00:06:17.262 --> 00:06:22.550
This material reality that we see is changing, it's finite, is bounded by time.
00:06:22.677 --> 00:06:36.161
The conclusion here has to be that we need to be in balance, we need to be without any attachment to the results of our actions and keep the focus on Brahman on the everlasting, eternal, ultimate reality.
00:06:36.271 --> 00:06:44.723
Shri Krishna in the verse that we just read he says that take refuge in loving surrender to the wise discernment of the Buddhi faculty.
00:06:44.867 --> 00:06:49.067
The Buddhi faculty is the evenness of mind, a balanced mind.
00:06:49.221 --> 00:06:56.630
And here it is guided that we need to take refuge, take the shelter of that wise discernment of the real and the unreal.
00:06:56.781 --> 00:06:59.180
Remember the real is something that is changeless.
00:06:59.781 --> 00:07:01.374
That is eternal.
00:07:01.504 --> 00:07:07.307
While the unreal is that which is changing, subject to modification, subject to decay.
00:07:07.608 --> 00:07:09.557
It is born, it will die.
00:07:09.887 --> 00:07:16.218
Whilst the real, the Sat is everlasting because it's never been born.
00:07:16.247 --> 00:07:17.298
It can never die.
00:07:17.687 --> 00:07:19.307
It is self existent.
00:07:19.848 --> 00:07:31.954
So this is why we need to have this discernment, so we can always be in refuge of this, the shelter of this buddhi faculty and the key here is loving surrender.
00:07:32.057 --> 00:07:33.737
So how can this be practiced?
00:07:33.946 --> 00:07:45.867
By surrendering what this shows is that we can make the choice to go to the discernment of that balanced mind, that mind that sees all as one, when done with love, we do it whole heartedly.
00:07:46.052 --> 00:07:49.992
So this surrender is because we understand that this is the better path.
00:07:50.101 --> 00:07:53.822
We need to continue to remind ourselves of the real and the unreal.
00:07:54.091 --> 00:08:00.151
Once we recognize what the real is, then surrender is natural because we know that is the better thing to do.
00:08:00.482 --> 00:08:04.021
That is the better action that will yield better results.
00:08:04.262 --> 00:08:11.461
Not that we're looking for better results, we don't have that attachment to those results, but we're not going to look to harm people.
00:08:11.651 --> 00:08:17.197
Or at least we're going to be looking at that action that does the least harm.
00:08:17.406 --> 00:08:28.596
So being in that knowledge of what is real, we can easily have surrender and we do it with love and whenever something is done with love, we know that it's done wholeheartedly.
00:08:28.757 --> 00:08:35.153
It's done with our fullness of being, it's done with our complete nature invested in that.
00:08:35.291 --> 00:08:39.227
The more we focus on the real, the easier it is to be in loving surrender.
00:08:39.707 --> 00:08:43.144
We need to allow this to be our natural default position.
00:08:43.575 --> 00:08:49.509
Whenever we find ourselves in trouble, we go back to this wise discernment of the real and the unreal.
00:08:49.678 --> 00:08:56.666
And this keeps us away from the attachments and desires that lead us to remain in this changing world.
00:08:56.936 --> 00:09:08.275
Therefore, our mind will always be troubled at the slightest inconvenience, if we continue to have attachment and continue to be fully invested in our desires.
00:09:08.546 --> 00:09:10.676
It's not that it's bad to have desires.
00:09:11.155 --> 00:09:11.995
It's okay.
00:09:12.235 --> 00:09:13.735
But do not be attached to them.
00:09:13.975 --> 00:09:17.586
You have a desire, let it rise up, then let it go.
00:09:18.066 --> 00:09:19.446
Don't think about it too much.
00:09:19.475 --> 00:09:25.676
Don't be focused on it too much because your main focus of life is liberation.
00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:30.399
Liberation has to be the ultimate goal for us, the ultimate outcome.
00:09:30.530 --> 00:09:37.495
The more we focus on this Real, on Brahman, the more we stabilize in this wisdom, and this is the whole point.
00:09:37.615 --> 00:09:44.946
The more we stabilize in wisdom, the more there is evenness of mind, the more this mind is calm and collected.
00:09:45.745 --> 00:09:55.956
Those whose karmas are only based on the logic of obtaining the fruits of material action are selfish and become miserly beings clinging to inert matter.
00:09:56.076 --> 00:10:09.472
So we can establish here that the actions we do for material fruits, like worldly success, wealth, prestige, power, influence, these are all selfish because you expect something and you expect an outcome of that thing.
00:10:09.712 --> 00:10:16.019
Whether in society within your home, with your parents, with your children, you expect something.
00:10:16.085 --> 00:10:19.205
These people here are called miserly by Shri Krishna.
00:10:19.264 --> 00:10:20.195
And why is that?
00:10:20.384 --> 00:10:23.445
It's because they are just focused on getting what the world can give.
00:10:24.014 --> 00:10:25.634
They aren't thinking of the ultimate.
00:10:25.904 --> 00:10:29.715
They aren't thinking about what will happen after death.
00:10:29.902 --> 00:10:37.491
If they were really in awareness about death and knew that death could happen at any time, would they focus on this changing reality?
00:10:37.881 --> 00:10:42.951
This changing world with it's changing levels of success and wealth and name and fame?
00:10:43.272 --> 00:10:44.172
Probably not.
00:10:44.221 --> 00:10:48.869
This is why Shri Krishna says when they have the ultimate available to them.
00:10:49.094 --> 00:10:51.734
Why they're chasing material success?
00:10:51.876 --> 00:10:53.636
Why are they going towards this?
00:10:53.846 --> 00:10:55.902
Why do they just want material gifts?
00:10:55.999 --> 00:10:58.514
Why do they not want the ultimate?
00:10:58.631 --> 00:11:06.979
What we need to understand here is that the actions can be done with the focus on the Real and we can still receive the fruits of the material action.
00:11:07.085 --> 00:11:10.601
This is something we need to really deeply understand.
00:11:10.711 --> 00:11:15.711
You can enjoy the fruits of all the material actions and still be focused on Brahman.
00:11:15.822 --> 00:11:19.871
The material fruits will come towards you naturally.
00:11:19.951 --> 00:11:22.501
Maybe because of your previous karma, who knows?
00:11:22.609 --> 00:11:30.211
But the thing is you can still have Brahman in the foreground and receive everything in the background in terms of material success.
00:11:30.315 --> 00:11:46.698
And you can even have Brahman in the background and still enjoy the material success that is in the foreground, because for that person, they are now in that state of balance that evenness of mind, they are not going to be manipulated by mere things that are around them.
00:11:46.741 --> 00:11:52.078
Just remember the real reward is focusing on the truth and being one with Brahman.
00:11:52.133 --> 00:11:59.659
If we want to look at the context of the whole verse, Krishna has shown us what is in store for us, depending on what we want to do.
00:11:59.753 --> 00:12:06.572
If we strive just for the fruits of material action, then that's all we're going to get and we lose a treasure that is full.
00:12:06.692 --> 00:12:17.347
If we choose to be a Gyani, who is in loving surrender to viveka, towards the discernment of what is real and unreal, to that wisdom, the fruits of their actions are everlasting.
00:12:17.477 --> 00:12:24.240
This is that treasure that is full and even if you take fullness out from that, it remains full.
00:12:24.283 --> 00:12:29.827
This is the treasure that is available to us, if we truly follow the words of Shri Krishna.
00:12:30.014 --> 00:12:30.964
Then verse 50.
00:12:31.110 --> 00:12:39.974
One who is permanently linked to the buddhi faculty goes beyond the relativity of sukha and dukha as the determiner of what they do.
00:12:40.139 --> 00:12:48.049
Therefore, connect with your atma through yoga, and that yoga will restore harmony and balance to all your actions.
00:12:48.292 --> 00:12:50.511
So let's look at the first sentence.
00:12:50.697 --> 00:13:00.183
One who is permanently linked to the buddhi faculty goes beyond the relativity of sukha and dukha as the determiner of what they do.
00:13:00.264 --> 00:13:07.129
This is fairly easy to understand and this has been established in previous verses as well about what needs to be done.
00:13:07.274 --> 00:13:17.139
We know that we need to go beyond the relativity of sukha and dukha meaning sorrow and comfort pleasure and pain.
00:13:18.048 --> 00:13:25.592
Let's go into this a bit more, that those that focus on Sat, on the real who continuously use their discernment.
00:13:25.692 --> 00:13:36.722
They'd go beyond, sukha and dukha, comfort and suffering, and every action of theirs, isn't determined on what will provide comfort for others or suffering for others.
00:13:36.875 --> 00:13:38.436
They will be beyond both of those.
00:13:38.899 --> 00:13:41.239
That also applies to their own self as well.
00:13:41.479 --> 00:13:47.068
They'll look beyond the comfort for themselves and also the suffering for themselves.
00:13:47.298 --> 00:14:02.465
Those individuals who are linked to their buddhi faculty are difficult to understand as people will not be able to understand why they act and especially when it could be going against their very own comfort or it perceives to provide suffering for others.
00:14:02.825 --> 00:14:12.186
This is why sometimes we find gurus are very difficult to understand because we try to fit them in a framework in which we see the world in.
00:14:12.328 --> 00:14:24.091
But here we can understand that a wise person, someone that is connected and permanently linked to the buddhi faculty, they perceive things far beyond, that we can understand.
00:14:24.250 --> 00:14:34.217
And because we are always constantly thinking about our own comfort or we are worried about being in suffering or being in pain.
00:14:34.380 --> 00:14:53.162
This makes it very difficult for us to understand this process and that's why if we truly want to be beyond comfort and suffering, what we need to do is first permanently link ourselves to the Buddhi faculty, to this mind, to that evenness of mind, the mind that is full of wisdom.
00:14:53.259 --> 00:15:01.455
At the same time, we need to ensure that whatever we do goes beyond the idea of comfort and suffering.
00:15:01.605 --> 00:15:03.014
This is very important.
00:15:03.059 --> 00:15:10.590
This can be linked with the previous verses that you are not in control of the fruits of your actions and this is basically reiterating the same thing.
00:15:11.019 --> 00:15:22.049
Shri Krishna continues in that verse to say, therefore, connect with your atman through yoga and that yoga will restore harmony and balance to all your actions.
00:15:22.570 --> 00:15:26.080
This is the aim for every listener or reader of the Bhagavad Gita.
00:15:26.193 --> 00:15:34.528
Connect with the Atman, connect with Brahman that is within through the yoga of discernment, knowing the real and the unreal.
00:15:34.798 --> 00:15:43.341
Whenever, we feel the ego wants to take over, by remembering this wisdom, this Gyana, we can bring harmony and balance to our actions.
00:15:43.453 --> 00:15:54.461
The actions mentioned in this yoga is not ritualistic actions or actions that please that which is unreal meaning material success and material reality or maya.
00:15:54.650 --> 00:15:57.441
The action here is anything done with the Buddhi.
00:15:57.921 --> 00:16:01.370
Remember the Atman doesn't receive any fruits of your actions.
00:16:01.701 --> 00:16:08.947
It is one with Brahman and beyond this world and the joys, pleasures, suffering and pain of this world.
00:16:09.217 --> 00:16:24.461
Remember this and your actions will always be balanced, they will never cause too much harm, nor cause too much joy for you and your actions will be towards peace because only in peace, can there be harmony.
00:16:24.629 --> 00:16:49.198
This is why it's important to understand that we need to continuously connect our Atman through that process of knowing what is real and unreal until we unite ourselves with the Atman, we will always be in that process of feeling pain and suffering, wanting our own comforts, instead of looking towards getting more or liberation.
00:16:49.379 --> 00:16:55.272
If you look at the context of the whole verse, really it's a reminder to connect with your Atman because that is what you are.
00:16:55.322 --> 00:16:59.601
This will always provide balance and the best outlook towards life.
00:16:59.735 --> 00:17:08.287
This is relatively difficult for people to achieve, but this is the simplest way to attain liberation and be self-realized.
00:17:08.461 --> 00:17:09.602
Verse 51.
00:17:09.730 --> 00:17:25.009
Those wise yogis who always act in the discernment of buddhi yoga and who have released their attachment to the karma phala results of their actions are mukta 'liberated from the bondage to continued rebirth.
00:17:25.529 --> 00:17:32.799
Their consciousness resides forever in that transcendental realm of Mine where hunger is never felt again.
00:17:33.017 --> 00:17:54.575
If you look at the first sentence, those wise yogis who always act in the discernment of buddhi yoga and who have released their attachment to the karma phala 'results of their actions' are mukta 'liberated from the bondage to continued rebirth.' Based on the previous verses Sri Krishna is guiding Arjuna on what the result will be.
00:17:54.729 --> 00:18:04.749
Prior to this Shri Krishna has been saying how important it is to utilize buddhi yoga and how important it is to not be focusing on the fruits of one's actions.
00:18:04.888 --> 00:18:06.209
We've established that right?
00:18:06.422 --> 00:18:22.045
And that also now they need to focus on the wisdom of what is 'sat and asat', but here the result is clearly stated that that person who practices this will be mukta, they will be liberated from the bondage to continued rebirth.
00:18:22.525 --> 00:18:28.342
There is an understanding that if you are liberated, there will be no birth again.
00:18:28.434 --> 00:18:30.075
Therefore you become the Eternal.
00:18:30.221 --> 00:18:46.144
But continued rebirth means that you continuously go through that process of birth and death because you still believe in the unreal, you're still invested in the unreal while you could be liberated, if you understand what is real.
00:18:46.255 --> 00:18:49.501
Here, Krishna is telling us what the result's going to be.
00:18:49.606 --> 00:18:52.450
Some people ask whether reincarnation is true or not.
00:18:52.690 --> 00:19:10.432
For me, I look back at some of the things that I do, the conditionings I have, the habits I have, the tendencies I have, some of these things are unexplainable in terms of when I look at my parents, some of these things don't make sense to me, or why am I so different to my brothers and why are they different to me?
00:19:11.428 --> 00:19:17.824
For me, that means that there is some element of reincarnation, some level of continuation that occurs.
00:19:18.423 --> 00:19:26.501
Those are my reasons for reincarnation, but here Shri Krishna's making it very clear on whether we want to be liberated or not.
00:19:26.607 --> 00:19:31.282
It is important that we release any attachment to the results of our actions.
00:19:31.623 --> 00:19:38.803
Shri Krishna considers these people to be wise and that they are the continuous practitioners of buddhi yoga.
00:19:39.163 --> 00:19:46.782
So just remember this, that to really be considered a devotee of Shri Krishna, this is what needs to be done.
00:19:46.930 --> 00:19:50.220
We need to be going towards mukti, towards liberation.
00:19:50.539 --> 00:20:02.462
We need to release our attachment to any results of our actions, whether they are pious or not pious, whether the actions are sattvic (pure) or not sattvic(pure), we are to go beyond these things.
00:20:02.479 --> 00:20:12.199
Shri Krishna in the next sentence says that their consciousness resides forever in that transcendental realm of mine, where hunger is never felt again.
00:20:12.709 --> 00:20:24.142
And this can be very tricky to understand, because Krishna is saying that the transcendental realm of mine, people would think of the naam and roop of Krishna, but this is not right.
00:20:24.230 --> 00:20:31.429
Then that means they've not understood the first word'transcendental' and transcendental means it is beyond name and form.
00:20:31.481 --> 00:20:41.318
You have to remind yourself always that yourself and Krishna have that same consciousness and both are already residing in that transcendental realm.
00:20:41.479 --> 00:20:45.949
The difference is that Krishna knows it and you don't and I don't.
00:20:46.084 --> 00:20:49.794
Our journey is to know it just as clear as Krishna knows it.
00:20:49.884 --> 00:20:55.693
When we keep our focus unchanged on Brahman, we will never feel the hunger of desire again.
00:20:55.804 --> 00:21:03.183
That transcendental realm is our natural state, and it's not something that we attain, it's something that is always here.
00:21:03.298 --> 00:21:10.448
That transcendental realm is beyond blemish, forever spotless and that is the character of a Yogi.
00:21:10.584 --> 00:21:20.604
When you enter that realm of Krishna that he's been talking about, there is no such thing as joy, no such thing as happiness, there's no such thing as suffering or pain.
00:21:20.693 --> 00:21:24.319
It's a place of complete serenity and calmness.
00:21:24.373 --> 00:21:30.150
This is something you can experience even within your own mind and it is as real as you want it to be.
00:21:30.195 --> 00:21:41.431
The context of the whole verse is that you concentrate on Brahman, transcending all the attachments that you have to the results, and you can go beyond the cycle of rebirth.
00:21:41.564 --> 00:21:48.167
You can be forever in that oneness and never have to come back onto this earth again.
