00:01:17.628 --> 00:01:21.438
Before I go into it again, like you said, there's a few things I want to discuss.
00:01:21.438 --> 00:01:27.198
The main thing I wanted to discuss is the book that I'll be using the translation that I'll be using for this.
00:01:27.528 --> 00:01:31.789
It's the Bhagavad Gita comes alive, a radical translation.
00:01:31.998 --> 00:01:33.399
It's by Jeffery Armstrong.
00:01:33.469 --> 00:01:47.885
The reason why I've chosen this one out of others is because it retains some Sanskrit words, which I think are necessary to be kept in as they are and it explains the essence really well effectively in English of those Sanskrit words.
00:01:48.063 --> 00:02:00.325
What has happened in some translations, and I've noticed this, that they may refer to a certain sanskrit terms, they translate it in the Abrahamic sense.
00:02:00.775 --> 00:02:16.277
What may be acceptable in the Western aspect to spirituality or religion in the Abrahamic religions, they use the words may apply for them, but for the essence in the east, it misses that.
00:02:16.707 --> 00:02:28.895
One example I give you will be 'paap.' They translate it as sin, but I would say it's an act that is done that causes more harm, that leads us to destruction.
00:02:29.074 --> 00:02:35.724
That for me is 'paap.' The concept of sin isn't really there in Hinduism or in Advaita Vedanta.
00:02:35.800 --> 00:02:41.770
It's really important that we understand that we're looking at things that are totally different dynamic.
00:02:41.924 --> 00:02:46.623
When we're looking at the Bhagavad Gita, we can't be using the Abrahamic understanding.
00:02:46.743 --> 00:02:52.054
We have to be using the understanding of the Eastern spiritual tradition.
00:02:52.155 --> 00:02:56.289
That's the main reason why I've kept this as the translation to use.
00:02:56.319 --> 00:02:59.759
I'm going to start from verse 28 of Chapter One.
00:02:59.879 --> 00:03:04.020
Well just to give you the background before verse 28.
00:03:04.117 --> 00:03:11.578
What's happened is as we know, the two sides, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, they're on the battlefield.
00:03:11.717 --> 00:03:20.206
The blind Maharaj is asking Sanjay to give a close account of this fight that is going to occur.
00:03:21.586 --> 00:03:26.447
Even though it's the Kurukshetra, the land of the Kurus, the Kuru is the clan.
00:03:26.598 --> 00:03:31.608
Really it is the Dharmshetra it is the land where the truth will be determined.
00:03:31.752 --> 00:03:35.495
Sanjay tells how the armies have gathered together.
00:03:36.395 --> 00:03:41.997
He tells them about who's on each side and makes that clear to the king.
00:03:42.076 --> 00:03:52.918
There's a point where he describes the conch being blown and the two sides creating that battlefield roar, getting their sides hyped up.
00:03:53.302 --> 00:03:57.475
In the midst of this hype, in the midst war and destruction.
00:03:57.628 --> 00:04:00.450
There lies a man in torment.
00:04:00.632 --> 00:04:05.242
Sanjay then explains what is going on in Arjun's mind.
00:04:05.353 --> 00:04:08.383
This is one interesting point that I want to make.
00:04:08.772 --> 00:04:19.529
And it's very interesting to understand this point because it shows us a lot about the mightiness of the Pandavas.
00:04:19.732 --> 00:04:37.382
In verse 20, it says that at that moment, standing upon this chariot with it's flag bearing the image of the mighty Hanuman and seeing the armies in formation with weapons already beginning to clash, Arjuna raised his bow and spoke to Shri Krishna.
00:04:38.024 --> 00:04:52.615
Now what's interesting here is that there is the image of Hanuman and Hanuman as we know is the image of a pure devotee, a sincere devotee and the one that follows Lord Ram.
00:04:52.755 --> 00:04:59.649
Now Lord Ram was the avatar of Vishnu and Krishna is the same avatar as Lord Ram.
00:05:00.223 --> 00:05:02.416
They are basically Vishnu in human form.
00:05:02.529 --> 00:05:26.634
This image in your mind has to set that you've got the mightiness of Hanuman as a flag and at the same time you got Arjuna who is mentally disturbed and we're going to see this in the verses that is going to follow and basically Arjuna then tells Lord Krishna, to drive the chariot in the middle of the field.
00:05:26.884 --> 00:05:34.723
He wants to be in between both of the armies and he wants to look at both sides that are willing to kill each other.
00:05:36.053 --> 00:05:40.620
Lord Krishna, he understands this request and then he goes to the middle of the battlefield.
00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:44.971
There are certain information I'm not mentioning right now because I'll be mentioning it later.
00:05:45.391 --> 00:05:53.137
When Arjuna sees friends, his gurus, his teachers, his brothers, his cousins, they're all there.
00:05:53.247 --> 00:05:59.259
His grandfathers, he can see them all willing to fight and it really affects him.
00:05:59.738 --> 00:06:01.119
It really disturbs him.
00:06:01.988 --> 00:06:11.576
We get to verse 28 now where it says that "Filled with deep sadness and profound empathy, Arjuna spoke.
00:06:11.689 --> 00:06:17.528
O Krishna, seeing my own family and friends standing ready to fight against each other.
00:06:18.408 --> 00:06:28.122
Verse 29 follows my limbs have lost their strength, my mouth is dry, my body is trembling with empathy and my hair is standing on end.
00:06:28.314 --> 00:06:35.377
Right now, what we are understanding of Arjuna's emotions is that, his mental state is that he's disturbed by all this.
00:06:35.572 --> 00:06:36.322
He sees this.
00:06:36.425 --> 00:06:42.035
He cannot understand how the people that he loves, that he cherishes are willing to kill each other.
00:06:43.774 --> 00:06:46.175
We can see that he loses all strength in the body.
00:06:46.444 --> 00:06:49.870
We can see that there is depression settling in.
00:06:50.021 --> 00:06:53.560
Arjuna is deep in his feelings right now.
00:06:53.711 --> 00:06:58.822
The word is very interesting the translation empathy, and not compassion.
00:06:59.331 --> 00:07:01.461
The reason for this, I think is two fold.
00:07:01.521 --> 00:07:07.802
Compassion would be something that is done in awareness, but empathy you can do in both ignorance and awareness.
00:07:07.802 --> 00:07:15.935
You can relate to someone and here we can see that Arjuna can relate in ignorance to the pain that's going to be there.
00:07:16.021 --> 00:07:17.771
The pain is there because of attachment.
00:07:17.771 --> 00:07:18.040
Yeah.
00:07:18.331 --> 00:07:34.500
As we have just seen the whole previous verses, we see the whole scene, he can see everyone that he loves and he connects to, and he cherishes and they are now there, ready to fight, ready to kill each other, thirsty for blood of the other army.
00:07:34.651 --> 00:07:36.401
Yeah, to defeat the other army.
00:07:37.031 --> 00:07:38.071
There's hatred there.
00:07:38.430 --> 00:07:42.860
There's greed there and he's just overwhelm ed with sadness about this.
00:07:42.980 --> 00:07:45.500
He uses the word that he's trembling with fear.
00:07:45.685 --> 00:07:45.925
Yeah.
00:07:45.925 --> 00:07:46.795
He's trembling.
00:07:46.997 --> 00:07:49.151
His limbs have lost strength.
00:07:49.288 --> 00:07:55.848
Now in verse 30, he says, My bow Gandiva has fallen from my hands.
00:07:55.994 --> 00:07:57.704
My skin is burning.
00:07:57.851 --> 00:08:00.581
I'm unable to remain standing.
00:08:00.641 --> 00:08:05.069
And my manas 'my mind' is unfocused and disturbed.
00:08:05.269 --> 00:08:08.660
Have you ever got to that point where you're so emotional you can't think straight?
00:08:08.822 --> 00:08:12.283
Basically, that is what is going on in Arjuna's mind.
00:08:12.399 --> 00:08:17.225
Arjuna is feeling that pain, that sadness.
00:08:17.293 --> 00:08:18.494
His skin is burning.
00:08:19.004 --> 00:08:25.603
Again, when you're in the heat of emotion, you feel your skin burning, you feel yourself heating up.
00:08:25.779 --> 00:08:33.260
We've all probably felt this in our life and this is, what's so interesting about the Bhagavad Gita, the reason why it's so impactful.
00:08:33.260 --> 00:08:39.618
Why it's one of the most talked about scriptures in the world is because you can relate to it as a human being.
00:08:39.806 --> 00:08:47.186
We've all been at that point, maybe in a different circumstance as Arjuna but we can all relate to it.
00:08:47.515 --> 00:08:50.546
That we've all been in a circumstance where our skin is burning.
00:08:50.692 --> 00:08:54.606
We get heated up and because of that, our mind isn't focused.
00:08:54.937 --> 00:08:55.927
We're disturbed.
00:08:56.716 --> 00:08:57.976
We can't think straight.
00:08:58.067 --> 00:09:04.153
We don't know how to think, our thoughts are going here, there, and everywhere we can relate to Arjuna in this.
00:09:04.241 --> 00:09:16.926
Verse 31 says, O Bhagavan, I'm perceiving many inauspicious signs, and I foresee only misfortune will be the outcome of destroying my beloved family and friends in this battle.
00:09:17.225 --> 00:09:22.566
Now we're understanding that Arjuna is now filled with attachment.
00:09:22.690 --> 00:09:22.899
Yeah.
00:09:22.929 --> 00:09:24.700
He's attached to his family.
00:09:25.320 --> 00:09:29.549
He's attached to his friends and he sees only misfortune.
00:09:29.970 --> 00:09:31.645
He seeing only the negative.
00:09:31.788 --> 00:09:32.957
He can't think straight.
00:09:33.123 --> 00:09:34.863
He's unfocused.
00:09:34.932 --> 00:09:36.373
He's not seeing the bigger picture.
00:09:36.552 --> 00:09:41.158
He's just seeing the picture that wants to be seen now, which is through his own mind.
00:09:41.283 --> 00:09:51.003
If you think about it, he's in the middle of the battlefield, if you look at it in terms of energy, he's getting conflicting energies from both sides.
00:09:51.168 --> 00:09:51.318
Yeah.
00:09:51.318 --> 00:09:54.109
The side that he's on and the side that he's fighting against.
00:09:54.222 --> 00:09:56.533
Then he talks about inauspicious signs.
00:09:56.655 --> 00:09:58.666
For seeing something that hasn't happened.
00:09:59.216 --> 00:10:02.361
He's perceiving something of the future and we do that don't we?
00:10:02.524 --> 00:10:09.092
We have expectations of things that are going to happen in the future and we say, oh, this is not good looking good.
00:10:09.216 --> 00:10:11.256
Then we get depressed about it.
00:10:11.256 --> 00:10:14.586
We get upset about it and we disturbed our mental state.
00:10:14.677 --> 00:10:19.412
Arjuna is telling Lord Krishna that there's only misfortune ahead.
00:10:19.682 --> 00:10:21.121
That's the thing that he's foresees.
00:10:21.371 --> 00:10:30.245
Let's be very honest here, they are two friends and at least Arjuna's very, very honest with Lord Krishna.
00:10:30.419 --> 00:10:34.529
He says "destroying my beloved family and friends", he knows the outcome.
00:10:34.559 --> 00:10:40.649
Eventually he knows that in reality with war there's bloodshed and he sees only misfortune.
00:10:40.792 --> 00:10:51.476
Verse 32 says "My dear Krishna, I do not wish for victory or to be a ruler or to enjoy Royal pleasures.
00:10:51.777 --> 00:10:58.230
O Bhagavan, O beloved of all, what is a use of power enjoyment, or even life itself?
00:10:58.370 --> 00:11:11.860
Verse 33 goes when all those for whose benefit we would rule, and with whom we were share abundance and pleasures, are dressed for battle in which they will not only lose their wealth, but their very life-breath?.
00:11:12.049 --> 00:11:16.220
Now, despite the mental state he's in, this is why he has empathy.
00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:19.730
He understands the pain of losing something.
00:11:19.952 --> 00:11:22.923
This is something that he's acutely aware of.
00:11:23.212 --> 00:11:30.352
He understands that, okay, people are going to lose their wealth, but to lose their life-breath, it's something he's not willing to do.
00:11:30.513 --> 00:11:35.972
Here Arjuna's taking a stand that he doesn't want to hurt anybody.
00:11:35.972 --> 00:11:40.202
He doesn't want to kill anyone because he'd be robbing them of their life.
00:11:41.472 --> 00:11:47.173
He's talking about what will he gain by being a ruler or by enjoying Royal pleasures.
00:11:47.375 --> 00:11:49.865
If the people that he loves are slain.
00:11:50.131 --> 00:11:56.711
He's asking all these questions again, he's telling his mental state to Sri Krishna.
00:11:57.792 --> 00:12:05.951
He's being very honest about how he's feeling, which is why he becomes a real seeker, because he's being honest.
00:12:06.581 --> 00:12:09.851
He's not fooling his friend or his teacher.
00:12:10.461 --> 00:12:11.953
He's being straight forward.
00:12:12.014 --> 00:12:13.004
This is what I'm feeling.
00:12:13.004 --> 00:12:14.264
I don't want to be rich.
00:12:14.464 --> 00:12:16.293
Again that's the way the ego works.
00:12:16.293 --> 00:12:21.365
Remember the ego can pretend to not want something just to avoid conflict.
00:12:21.595 --> 00:12:22.615
Even that is ego.
00:12:23.424 --> 00:12:25.134
We're not there to avoid conflict.
00:12:25.674 --> 00:12:27.264
We're there to remove conflict.
00:12:27.504 --> 00:12:30.453
To be in that mind, which is stable.
00:12:30.849 --> 00:12:32.748
Here, Arjuna is very clear.
00:12:32.778 --> 00:12:34.128
He doesn't wish for victory.
00:12:34.577 --> 00:12:36.498
He doesn't care about winning this war.
00:12:36.900 --> 00:12:41.793
Then verse 34 and 35 again showing his attachment.
00:12:43.014 --> 00:12:54.932
'These are all my dear ones, teachers, fathers, children, grandfathers, uncles brother-in-law or my kinsmen and friends.' 'O Bhagavan, I do not wish to kill them.
00:12:55.201 --> 00:13:06.243
Even if they are intent upon killing me, I would not harm them to become ruler of the trilokas, the three cosmic realms, what to speak of this tiny world.
00:13:06.807 --> 00:13:08.606
He's looking at all his attachments.
00:13:08.606 --> 00:13:12.653
He's showing Sri Krishna his real feelings.
00:13:12.956 --> 00:13:15.066
He loves his family, his friends.
00:13:15.666 --> 00:13:17.556
He can't look to harm them.
00:13:17.765 --> 00:13:20.765
Even if they would kill him, he's willing to allow that to happen.
00:13:20.979 --> 00:13:22.399
That is showing how weak he is.
00:13:22.418 --> 00:13:26.198
Now, some people may turn around and say, well, he's being really compassionate.
00:13:26.393 --> 00:13:27.712
He's being really caring.
00:13:27.849 --> 00:13:39.918
But in reality, he's being a coward at the same time, because he's meant to be leading an army for righteousness and even for the battle of righteousness, he's hesitating.
00:13:40.068 --> 00:13:43.208
Where he's willing that the other army can kill him.
00:13:43.345 --> 00:13:45.924
At this point, we can kind of guess that he's suicidal.
00:13:46.182 --> 00:13:48.902
Look at the way, the Bhagavad Gita has started already?.
00:13:48.986 --> 00:13:50.966
It has shown the weakness of the mind.
00:13:51.101 --> 00:13:54.792
Let me explain the trilokas, the three cosmic realms.
00:13:54.855 --> 00:14:01.255
So according to Hindu mythology yeah, the, they depict three kingdoms of the known universe.
00:14:01.346 --> 00:14:05.525
So there's a Swargalok, which is the land of the gods.
00:14:06.005 --> 00:14:08.966
There's Mrityulok , which is the middle kingdom of men.
00:14:09.475 --> 00:14:17.202
And then there's Patalok, which is the home of the asuras, the fallen gods and what you could term as demons.
00:14:17.633 --> 00:14:23.118
That is the three cosmic realms that Arjuna is talking about.
00:14:23.327 --> 00:14:25.908
Then he says what you speak of this tiny world.
00:14:26.118 --> 00:14:26.988
It's very interesting.
00:14:26.988 --> 00:14:33.205
This tiny world that he's talking about is the land of the Kurus, the whole kingdom that they're fighting for.
00:14:33.307 --> 00:14:43.504
He's basically showing that he's not willing to kill them at any cost, no matter what gift he may be given if he kills him, he's not willing to accept it right now.
00:14:43.695 --> 00:14:45.254
This is what he's thinking right now.
00:14:45.904 --> 00:14:59.273
This is the first episode of this commentary and we are basically going to go into verses 36 to verse 47 of the Bhagavad Gita.
00:14:59.342 --> 00:15:05.289
Let me recap this for you right now that at the moment in chapter one, we've set the scene.
00:15:05.450 --> 00:15:10.485
He can see what's going on and we get an insight into Arjuna's mind.
00:15:11.176 --> 00:15:15.676
We're seeing what Sri Krishna is going to have to deal with.
00:15:15.798 --> 00:15:24.798
When we talking about the mind, we talking about a mind that is resolute in knowing what is right and what is wrong, what is the best thing to do?
00:15:25.278 --> 00:15:26.388
I wouldn't say what is right or wrong.
00:15:26.567 --> 00:15:28.248
What is the better action to do?
00:15:28.518 --> 00:15:33.587
And right now we see that for Arjuna, it is completely blurred.
00:15:33.764 --> 00:15:35.264
It's completely messed up.
00:15:35.501 --> 00:15:39.121
Psychologically, he is in despair.
00:15:39.350 --> 00:15:49.458
it's going to be really interesting because now Sri Krishna has to think about how is he going to deal with his friend right now he's willing to give up everything even before the battle has started.
00:15:49.688 --> 00:15:52.058
Whose mental state is not ready to lead an army?
00:15:52.221 --> 00:15:54.471
He's not showing himself to be a true leader.
00:15:54.797 --> 00:16:03.211
Right now, we're seeing the effect of Arjuna's mind and we've all been in the situation where mind has been in a whirlwind.
00:16:03.931 --> 00:16:07.650
We've all been in that time where bodies have burned up in a situation.
00:16:07.734 --> 00:16:09.153
So we can relate to Arjuna.
00:16:09.173 --> 00:16:10.673
We can feel what he's feeling.
00:16:11.423 --> 00:16:12.504
We can understand it.
00:16:12.864 --> 00:16:13.833
We can relate to it.
00:16:14.422 --> 00:16:19.111
Yeah, this Mahabharata is not just a war that happened historically.
00:16:19.831 --> 00:16:21.662
Who knows if it happened historically.
00:16:21.785 --> 00:16:27.719
The main thing is it's happening in the world right now, it's happening within our own mind right now.
00:16:27.860 --> 00:16:31.697
When we are on the path of righteousness, do we give up very easily?
00:16:31.697 --> 00:16:36.916
Are we like Arjuna, where we're thinking, well, there's not much benefit from being on righteousness?
00:16:37.096 --> 00:16:41.918
I'd rather give up all the boons of righteousness and allow evil to rule.
00:16:42.056 --> 00:16:42.265
Yeah.
00:16:42.296 --> 00:16:44.899
To allow misinformation, to rule.
00:16:45.096 --> 00:16:47.494
We face this battle every day, every moment.
00:16:47.657 --> 00:16:50.366
I look forward to sharing more in the next episode.
