In this episode of The Bearded Mystic Podcast, host Rahul N Singh delves into the profound philosophy of yoga beyond the physical postures (asanas). He discusses the true meaning of yoga, which is to be in union with formless awareness or Brahman. Rahul explains key concepts from the Upanishads, including the yamas (ethical restraints) and niyamas (personal observances), and the significance of the four Mahavakyas (great sayings). The episode emphasizes integrating this wisdom into daily life to achieve a state of oneness and Jeevan Mukti (liberation while alive). Rahul also highlights the importance of true knowledge (jnana), meditation (dhyana), devotion (bhakti), and selfless action (karma) in realizing one's true nature. Listeners are invited to engage further through comments, individual spiritual discussions, and merchandise.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.378
Yoga is a word that we hear a lot about nowadays.
00:00:03.378 --> 00:00:19.042
A few weeks ago we celebrated we celebrated the International Day of Yoga and I'm sure many of us put on our comfortable clothes and did some yoga postures which is obviously wonderful and excellent for the body.
00:00:19.972 --> 00:00:26.062
This prepares us to sit in meditation and also enter Samadhi comfortably.
00:00:27.687 --> 00:00:34.317
Yet, yoga is much more than simply stretches or body maneuvering known as the asanas.
00:00:34.807 --> 00:00:39.756
Yoga means to yoke, it means to be in union, and what am I to be in the union of?
00:00:40.097 --> 00:00:43.156
What does this union consist of?
00:00:43.524 --> 00:01:01.704
This question was answered by the mystical sages, the rishis of the Upanishads, who declared through their aphorisms and discourses on what enlightenment is, simply knowing that there is nothing but consciousness or formless awareness.
00:01:02.067 --> 00:01:22.927
Knowing that the individual self is formless awareness is the first step, but yoga is realizing and integrating that formless awareness which is the true nature of not just myself, but of everything, in every aspect that exists and does not exist, is this formless awareness.
00:01:23.097 --> 00:01:27.337
There is nothing beyond it and nothing that does not consist of it.
00:01:27.563 --> 00:01:34.475
I have often felt that yoga is a word that has been overused yet mildly understood.
00:01:34.796 --> 00:01:42.385
For example, does every yoga studio in the country or world study the Patanjali Yoga Sutras as its main philosophy?
00:01:42.775 --> 00:01:46.656
How many of them know about dhyana, meditative absorption?
00:01:46.945 --> 00:01:49.365
How many have experienced samadhi?
00:01:49.715 --> 00:02:02.885
More importantly, before getting to the asanas, which are the yogic postures, how many know about the yamas and the niyamas, the social ethics and five personal practices?
00:02:02.885 --> 00:02:08.126
The yamas are Ahimsa, actions that cause the least amount of harm.
00:02:08.406 --> 00:02:12.746
Satya, truthfulness in intention, word and action.
00:02:13.376 --> 00:02:19.846
Asteya, not stealing what is not yours or not participating in corruption of any kind.
00:02:20.445 --> 00:02:36.765
Brahmacharya, meaning learning to moderate sensations, and then aparigraha, not being greedy and possessive, so sharing with all and not being attached to one's possessions or reducing one's taxes through tax evasion.
00:02:37.925 --> 00:02:43.519
The niyamas are saucha, which is to have purity of intention, thoughts and deed.
00:02:44.098 --> 00:02:47.118
Then Santosh, which is to have contentment.
00:02:47.818 --> 00:02:52.989
To have tapas, so there needs to be self discipline and training the senses.
00:02:53.679 --> 00:02:57.596
Then svadhyaya which is the inner exploration of the self.
00:02:57.675 --> 00:03:05.635
And then Ishvara Pranidhara, which is focusing and surrendering to formless awareness or your Isht Devta.
00:03:05.870 --> 00:03:10.800
As mentioned earlier, yoga is all about understanding one's true nature.
00:03:11.219 --> 00:03:13.360
So, let's do that today.
00:03:13.516 --> 00:03:16.317
Thank you for joining me at the Bearded Mystic Podcast.
00:03:16.766 --> 00:03:19.796
I'm your host, Rahul N Singh.
00:03:20.266 --> 00:03:25.967
The Bearded Mystic Podcast is about waking and growing in oneness.
00:03:25.967 --> 00:03:35.741
There are a number of sayings in the Upanishads which are not only to be recited, but they are to be felt, to be experienced.
00:03:36.361 --> 00:03:45.931
And to be remembered continuously throughout the day and to dispel any ignorance of what we truly are not.
00:03:46.331 --> 00:04:03.752
These aphorisms are to show us what our true nature is and how, with the mere knowing of these statements, depending on our karma, we may either instantaneously realise what we really are or start the journey of realising what we really are.
00:04:04.122 --> 00:04:13.081
Yoga is when we integrate this formless awareness into our daily life and it is sown into our daily thoughts and actions.
00:04:13.632 --> 00:04:17.742
Our whole existence is nothing but this formless awareness itself.
00:04:18.112 --> 00:04:23.521
And this is the living reality of the Jeevan Mukta, the realized being.
00:04:23.572 --> 00:04:27.348
Let's look into the sayings of Satyam Jnanam Anantam Brahman.
00:04:27.588 --> 00:04:33.737
Now, Satyam here means to hold truth, which is very beautiful.
00:04:34.098 --> 00:04:36.757
There is one thing, you know the truth.
00:04:37.317 --> 00:04:46.728
But then to hold it close to our hearts, to remember it, to be aware of it, to be in awe of it, is when we allow it to penetrate into our being.
00:04:47.028 --> 00:04:51.648
We must experience this truth and withdraw back to it whenever we can.
00:04:51.958 --> 00:05:03.937
So here it is, talking about knowing the truth, which is Brahman, or formless awareness, and then holding onto this truth, which is holding onto Brahman, or formless awareness.
00:05:04.658 --> 00:05:27.543
So holding you very dear to ourselves and the more we withdraw back to this in our daily lives, the more aware we become of our natural state, which is bliss, contentment and peace It will help us especially when we have challenges too because we know what the truth is we can withdraw back into that awareness and actually remain there.
00:05:27.994 --> 00:05:34.593
This space gives us the opportunity to see the longer term impacts of anything we do or say.
00:05:34.843 --> 00:05:40.233
It allows us to see whether a response is necessary or not.
00:05:40.423 --> 00:05:47.524
It brings us to a natural place of expanse where our heart grows and allows compassion to thrive.
00:05:47.553 --> 00:05:51.459
Then Jnanam can be seen as knowledge or wisdom.
00:05:51.869 --> 00:05:55.579
The only way to dispel ignorance is through knowledge.
00:05:56.269 --> 00:05:59.209
With Gyan, the ignorance is pierced through.
00:05:59.678 --> 00:06:02.408
Ignorance is like a balloon that is inflated.
00:06:02.699 --> 00:06:05.439
And then you have a needle that pops the balloon.
00:06:05.809 --> 00:06:14.358
Likewise, Gyan, when it hits our heart, the ego is brought back to its natural state and it is no longer inflated.
00:06:14.449 --> 00:06:18.158
So gyan is that needle pricks through the ego.
00:06:18.619 --> 00:06:25.548
We inflate our ego with all the labels and social conditionings that's been built up over the years.
00:06:26.199 --> 00:06:35.809
When we inflate it with showing how rich we are by being greedy, or we show our wealth by donating to charity, we go to the temple, we do religious rituals.
00:06:36.269 --> 00:06:41.149
And then we are this nationality, this caste, this gender, etc, etc.
00:06:41.178 --> 00:06:42.788
It goes on and on.
00:06:42.788 --> 00:06:47.559
And therefore knowledge shows us that we are not any of that, but we are ultimately formless.
00:06:48.238 --> 00:06:51.728
The experience we have in this body is that we are conscious.
00:06:52.158 --> 00:06:55.899
So we go to to that space of consciousness and we investigate it.
00:06:56.449 --> 00:07:06.199
If we took all of existence away, including space, atoms, and energy, then what remains the answer is simply aliveness.
00:07:06.348 --> 00:07:09.199
This aliveness is full and formless.
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:16.509
And when I do this simple exercise, the most important aspect is that even awareness remains.
00:07:16.809 --> 00:07:21.019
So this awareness is both fullness and formless.
00:07:21.019 --> 00:07:24.838
Once we have directly experienced it.
00:07:25.199 --> 00:07:29.959
We need to be able to fully integrate this Gyan into our daily lives.
00:07:30.329 --> 00:07:34.918
We know that we are Brahman and there is only this formless awareness.
00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:37.389
There is no second to this.
00:07:38.088 --> 00:07:49.358
I perceive it as the underlying reality in all of existence and I create a very personal and intimate relationship with it in the spirit of devotion.
00:07:49.665 --> 00:08:14.975
The absence of knowledge means ignorance, therefore if we do not have Gyan, then we will only be in ignorance and we will have the false understanding even to the point where we could get a glimpse of this truth and think we are now enlightened and therefore we grow a spiritual yet subtle ego as a result.
00:08:15.675 --> 00:08:22.915
We are not able to break free from it because we believe we have no ego, because we mistake the glimpse for enlightenment.
00:08:23.406 --> 00:08:28.906
And this is a big issue in the non dual and spiritual circles today.
00:08:28.906 --> 00:08:30.875
Anantam means infinite.
00:08:31.406 --> 00:08:35.005
This Brahman, this formless awareness, is infinite.
00:08:35.405 --> 00:08:40.975
It is boundless, spaceless, timeless, eternal, formless, imageless.
00:08:41.416 --> 00:08:44.135
There is no beginning and there is no end to this.
00:08:44.605 --> 00:08:48.275
Whatever I perceive is nothing but this one Brahman.
00:08:48.666 --> 00:08:53.336
To even say there is one is not needed, but it is the only thing in existence.
00:08:53.416 --> 00:09:06.686
Just like a crystal prism is able to reflect many colours in all directions, and Brahman is one and alone, one alone, and the whole universe is its many colours of manifestation.
00:09:06.686 --> 00:09:26.946
Brahman is this formless awareness that is changeless, omnipresent, boundless, permanent, existent and non existent, formless, shapeless, colourless, devoid of all attributes, nirgun, yet attributes can be manifested or reflected from this Brahman itself as Saguna Brahman or Ishvara.
00:09:26.946 --> 00:09:34.816
This Brahman is infinite and interconnected to all as this universe and its occupants are its manifestation.
00:09:35.316 --> 00:09:42.066
Brahman is the truth held closely in the enlightened one's heart as one's true nature.
00:09:42.556 --> 00:09:51.431
This Brahman is the knowledge of one's true nature and shows us that what causes ignorance, and misidentification.
00:09:51.770 --> 00:09:56.140
All these are blended together in the living reality of oneness.
00:09:56.541 --> 00:10:04.350
The true understanding of Brahman, truth, knowledge and infinite oneness is what yoga is about.
00:10:04.604 --> 00:10:15.269
Sometimes we need something more direct or steps to help us dive deeper and this is where the four Mahavakyas come in or the four great sayings of the Upanishads.
00:10:15.610 --> 00:10:19.278
Prajnanam Brahma is the first Mahavakya we look at.
00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:22.678
This simply means that consciousness is Brahman.
00:10:23.208 --> 00:10:26.599
If we had to recognize Brahman, how can we do this?
00:10:27.019 --> 00:10:30.739
It has to be conscious, it has to be alive in Vedanta.
00:10:31.288 --> 00:10:33.808
It is clearly understood to be awareness.
00:10:34.178 --> 00:10:37.469
So Brahman doesn't need to be a god that you worship.
00:10:37.828 --> 00:10:40.849
In fact, it is the very reality that you are.
00:10:41.042 --> 00:10:46.346
So an atheist or former atheist like me would be extremely comfortable with this.
00:10:47.086 --> 00:10:51.376
It is that awareness that is always there like the ever present screen.
00:10:51.626 --> 00:10:53.787
The screen has a movie playing on it.
00:10:54.167 --> 00:10:57.604
And awareness has the movie of life playing on it.
00:10:57.953 --> 00:11:03.933
Like the screen, nothing changes to it regardless of what the movie represents or shows.
00:11:04.313 --> 00:11:11.443
Likewise, this awareness is untouched by any of the impressions or conditioning that life presents.
00:11:11.783 --> 00:11:19.914
To simply understand this even further, if I see this camera in front of me, it is my eyes that see this camera.
00:11:20.304 --> 00:11:23.825
Due to the light reflecting, the camera is seen by my eyes.
00:11:24.365 --> 00:11:29.865
The eyes sends this information to the brain or to the mind and then mirrors the camera.
00:11:30.355 --> 00:11:41.195
This camera is seen through the lens of the mind and depending on the state of mind, it may describe the camera like ugly, beautiful, high quality or low quality.
00:11:41.804 --> 00:11:45.705
Now all this function has occurred, but what has remained?
00:11:45.889 --> 00:11:52.529
It is the sakshi, or the observer, the witness, that awareness.
00:11:53.299 --> 00:11:57.029
This is what is consciousness or formless awareness.
00:11:57.100 --> 00:12:00.090
Throughout the seeing, awareness is present.
00:12:00.269 --> 00:12:05.409
Throughout the mind processing and reflecting on what is seen, Awareness is present.
00:12:05.899 --> 00:12:13.659
Then one simply has to be aware of formless awareness, and this is something we can directly experience.
00:12:14.020 --> 00:12:18.500
Therefore, this formless awareness remains throughout all of our daily activities.
00:12:19.191 --> 00:12:26.120
Without this awareness, no camera would be seen through the eyes, nor can it be interpreted through the mind.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:36.801
Due to awareness, we can be the observer, and yet not identify our individuality with the mind, with the eyes, or even with the camera.
00:12:37.211 --> 00:12:43.615
We move from individuality to the all expansive consciousness of formless awareness.
00:12:44.556 --> 00:12:58.206
That expansive space of formlessness remains as it is, so it is here that we recognise that consciousness is Brahman, or Prajnanam Brahma, and that is Yoga.
00:12:58.206 --> 00:13:02.775
Then there is the famous Tat Tvam Asi, meaning that you are.
00:13:03.255 --> 00:13:05.416
So let's break this down even further.
00:13:05.951 --> 00:13:11.301
Before we understand what Tat or That is, let us understand who we are.
00:13:12.140 --> 00:13:23.990
Using our viveka or discernment, we understand that anything that changes is temporary and unreal, and whatever is changeless is permanent and real.
00:13:24.467 --> 00:13:25.368
Very simple.
00:13:26.207 --> 00:13:27.827
So, who am I?
00:13:28.618 --> 00:13:30.077
Well, am I this body?
00:13:30.988 --> 00:13:35.658
Well, I know for a fact that my body has changed and is continuously changing.
00:13:36.067 --> 00:13:39.878
It is said that the body cells regenerate every 7 years.
00:13:40.398 --> 00:13:46.827
But the point is, on a cellular level, we change, our facial features change, our skin changes.
00:13:47.447 --> 00:14:05.447
So, As we go from being a new born, to a child, to adolescence, to middle age, to elderly and then eventually meeting our demise, we see this body is temporary and constantly in flux, therefore, that cannot be who I am according to you.
00:14:06.352 --> 00:14:12.332
The Vedantic Understanding A simple way to explain this is if my hand is chopped off.
00:14:12.923 --> 00:14:18.503
As soon as the hand is chopped off, the missing hand is not associated with the body now.
00:14:19.602 --> 00:14:26.123
The hand does not have a permanent individual consciousness that remains after it's been chopped off.
00:14:26.523 --> 00:14:33.113
It is very temporary to the body and has allowed the body to change due to its removal.
00:14:34.437 --> 00:14:41.500
Now, the chopped hand will start to decay, yet have I, the awareness, depleted due to the removal of the hand?
00:14:41.780 --> 00:14:48.510
No, awareness remains as it is, hence it is the real, the permanent.
00:14:49.240 --> 00:14:59.301
So the key here is that I can observe and be aware of these changes and yet this awareness within me does not change.
00:14:59.509 --> 00:15:06.688
By default, if I am not the body, then I am not the mind, but this may need a little more investigation.
00:15:07.499 --> 00:15:14.869
My thoughts are constantly changing and I am thinking something new or something from the past every second.
00:15:15.688 --> 00:15:23.509
My feelings, my emotions, they change according to the situation or circumstances that I am in.
00:15:23.739 --> 00:15:27.568
My desires constantly adapt when I get what I want.
00:15:27.833 --> 00:15:53.456
Another desire arises and appears, when I don't get what I want, I'm emotional about it, I may get angry and frustrated, my beliefs change, one time I believed in God, now I don't, or I followed no religion, now I believe in a particular religion, all these ideas and concepts, of which there are many more, are constantly changing, and are never permanent.
00:15:54.062 --> 00:15:56.652
So, I cannot even be the mind.
00:15:56.961 --> 00:16:09.008
But yet again, all these thoughts, feelings, desires, beliefs all present themselves onto awareness, but none of them stick to awareness, hence awareness does not change.
00:16:09.807 --> 00:16:15.717
Awareness is not a belief system, nor an experience, but a living reality.
00:16:15.988 --> 00:16:17.648
So, what am I?
00:16:17.927 --> 00:16:18.577
Who am I?
00:16:19.138 --> 00:16:24.508
It has been established that I am not the body or mind as it is always changing.
00:16:25.388 --> 00:16:31.258
Well, I am that which is truly changeless permanent and that is awareness itself.
00:16:31.837 --> 00:16:34.148
There is nothing beyond awareness.
00:16:34.437 --> 00:16:39.682
If we think there is, then merely we are obscuring awareness with our ego.
00:16:39.982 --> 00:16:42.232
This awareness is what we are.
00:16:42.543 --> 00:16:49.092
This establishes the you are or Tvam Asi . Now, what is Tat or Thar?
00:16:49.658 --> 00:16:51.438
It is Brahman itself.
00:16:51.558 --> 00:16:54.469
Brahman is indivisible and non dual.
00:16:54.678 --> 00:17:03.019
It is beyond attributes like form, colour, space, time, boundary, life, death, odour, energy, essence, etc.
00:17:03.808 --> 00:17:07.479
This awareness is accessed by simply being aware of it.
00:17:07.919 --> 00:17:13.634
Once we do this, we must let go of anything that can be divided or multiplied by it.
00:17:13.933 --> 00:17:17.503
and rest in awareness that is ever present and partless.
00:17:18.054 --> 00:17:21.894
Then the fullness of that, or tat, is now our reality.
00:17:22.263 --> 00:17:32.834
Once that occurs, it becomes blatantly obvious that tat tvam asi, that Brahman, is what you are, and that understanding and realization is yoga.
00:17:34.058 --> 00:17:39.439
Then there is the third Mahavakya, which is AyamAtma Brahma.
00:17:40.368 --> 00:17:45.692
This simply means that Atma is Brahman or simply the Jeev is Brahman.
00:17:46.452 --> 00:17:49.133
We think we are an individual and separate being.
00:17:49.593 --> 00:18:06.867
The whole notion of ignorance is because we think we are different to consciousness and not for any wrong reason, it is more tangible to think we are the body and the same with our mind and its activities like sensations, feelings and thinking.
00:18:07.317 --> 00:18:19.038
We have fallen in love with the reflection of consciousness instead of directly seeing that it is us, meaning consciousness, that is being reflected.
00:18:20.448 --> 00:18:26.557
And we also create a different identity that the jiva or the atma or the soul is separate.
00:18:27.067 --> 00:18:34.147
So Adi Shankara Ji explains this very beautifully and I never tire of saying this because it truly explains everything so well.
00:18:34.616 --> 00:18:38.262
Brahma Satyam Jagan Mithya Jivo Brahmaiva naparah.
00:18:38.694 --> 00:18:47.184
Brahma Satyam means that awareness is the only reality, Brahman is the only truth, the only Real One.
00:18:47.320 --> 00:18:51.770
And due to that, Jagan Mithya means this universe is Mithya.
00:18:52.191 --> 00:18:58.020
Now Mithya means both existent and non existent or real or unreal.
00:18:58.431 --> 00:19:09.580
So when we realize we are awareness or Brahman, then this universe is non existent or unreal because the only truth is Brahman, the only reality is formless awareness.
00:19:10.510 --> 00:19:31.375
Now, when we are functioning in the world, in this relative reality or transactional reality, it is existent or real because in order for me to interact with everything around me it must have some semblance of reality, hence this universe is simply a reflection of Brahman.
00:19:31.875 --> 00:19:36.336
Maya is there because of Brahman and only because of Brahman.
00:19:36.570 --> 00:19:47.211
Our awareness doesn't diminish, especially when we function as the body and mind in the world, which appears to be separate and individual.
00:19:47.711 --> 00:19:49.001
It remains centred.
00:19:49.258 --> 00:19:54.708
The awareness remains in the centre of the heart, as Sri Ramana Maharshi would say.
00:19:54.859 --> 00:19:59.009
Then, this individual is none other than Brahman.
00:19:59.170 --> 00:20:04.069
Jivo Brahmaiva naparah, this jiva is the same as Brahman.
00:20:04.470 --> 00:20:17.299
So the apparent individual soul or atma or consciousness or awareness localised in the body and mind is actually one and the same as pure consciousness or supreme consciousness.
00:20:18.039 --> 00:20:21.809
You know, sometimes people say there's the Atma and the Supreme Atma.
00:20:22.041 --> 00:20:26.372
This is how we understand that the ultimate realization is oneness.
00:20:26.751 --> 00:20:33.291
With the individuality seen as false, once oneness is experienced, then all separation ceases.
00:20:33.801 --> 00:20:48.652
Then we know, As it is our own self that is Brahman alone, or that our Atma or Jeeva is one and the same as Brahman, we are nothing but this formless awareness, and this is the yoga of Jeeva and Brahman.
00:20:49.111 --> 00:20:55.300
Then the final one, is the very famous Aham Brahmasmi, which means, I am Brahman.
00:20:56.621 --> 00:21:13.256
As we have seen, With the examples above, that the I am can be attached to anything, for example, I am the body, I am the soul, I am the ego, I am the mind, I am rich, I am ill, I am poor and so on.
00:21:13.665 --> 00:21:17.986
Anything that can be identified with can be attached to the I am.
00:21:18.165 --> 00:21:24.945
This I am joins with everything and anything, but what is everything and anything contained in?
00:21:25.516 --> 00:21:31.855
This Pure Consciousness, this Brahman, you see, there is nothing prior to Brahman or Consciousness.
00:21:32.276 --> 00:21:35.465
All is contained in this Formless Awareness.
00:21:36.415 --> 00:21:52.859
Now, it is easy to conceptualise this, and if we utilise our discernment, and we understand that everything and anything of this world is changing and temporary, and will one day be destroyed, then we know what is left.
00:21:53.555 --> 00:21:56.325
Only that which is changeless and permanent.
00:21:57.015 --> 00:22:00.444
So where does the I am truly have its origin?
00:22:01.075 --> 00:22:14.904
The I am realises its true nature which is Brahman, therefore it is that very existence which says I am Brahman or Aham Brahmasmi and not the individual self or the ego, whether subtle or not.
00:22:15.099 --> 00:22:19.769
There is no ego that is attached to this formless awareness.
00:22:20.450 --> 00:22:24.625
There is no thought attached to this Brahman, to this I am.
00:22:25.884 --> 00:22:31.115
It is Boundless Partless Ceaseless Formless Attributeless.
00:22:31.115 --> 00:22:39.595
Objectless, Egoless, Thoughtless, Imageless, free without any beginning nor end, Timeless.
00:22:39.625 --> 00:22:43.244
It cannot be captured nor grasped, neither is it empty.
00:22:43.575 --> 00:22:47.412
It is Pure Fullness, the Absolute Nirguna and.
00:22:47.662 --> 00:22:48.291
Infinite.
00:22:48.551 --> 00:22:51.051
This is what Aham Brahmasmi is.
00:22:52.112 --> 00:22:59.771
A common misconception, and somewhat annoyingly so, is that people think that Aham Brahmasmi means that I am God.
00:23:00.412 --> 00:23:04.811
That is very immature understanding because it is not saying I am Ishwara.
00:23:05.122 --> 00:23:16.291
So to truly understand the Mahavakya, we need to understand that it is not talking about the personal God, but only about awareness or consciousness.
00:23:16.828 --> 00:23:41.628
Whether we get insulted or elevated, criticized or praised, whether we are happy or sad, we no longer bring that identification to the body or the mind, we go back to our understanding of our true nature and the realization that I am formless awareness and we are always in bliss and peace as a result.
00:23:42.778 --> 00:23:58.259
So once we understand this infinite existence is what I am and it is Brahman and we fully integrate our identity with It, then that is the yoga of Aham Brahmasmi, I am Brahman.
00:23:59.449 --> 00:24:07.669
So this is the yoga of non duality and simply that Brahman is this ultimate reality, infinite knowledge.
00:24:07.669 --> 00:24:26.919
Once we understand these grand statements, these mahavakyas, and they become our very experience, our very living reality, and the ego is fully annihilated due to that, then that is Jeevan Mukti, which is the whole purpose of the spiritual journey..
00:24:27.489 --> 00:24:32.213
With bhakti, devotion, we create the oneness between us and the lord.
00:24:32.673 --> 00:24:36.253
With love and affection, we have a relationship with the one.
00:24:36.634 --> 00:24:42.624
We worship things like our isht-devta, our guru, or anything we deeply love.
00:24:43.114 --> 00:24:55.578
It starts in duality, but when we immerse ourselves in devotional practices like naamjapa, we become one with the one we worship, then this whole existence is the Lord.
00:24:55.919 --> 00:25:01.038
Brahman is the only thing, yet everything, and that is true bhakti.
00:25:02.628 --> 00:25:17.239
And most of all, we can go straight to nirgun bhakti, where our devotion is only to the formless, and no other object or attribute or object of worship, whether statue, image or symbol is required.
00:25:17.522 --> 00:25:22.123
With Karma, we create oneness between the act and the action.
00:25:22.353 --> 00:25:33.743
When we do selfless action, where we do not want any of the fruits or rewards for the actions that we do, when we let go of non doership, this automatically gets rid of individuality.
00:25:35.054 --> 00:25:40.183
Also, when we are doing any action, we are observers rather than the doer.
00:25:40.594 --> 00:25:44.124
Therefore, we automatically become the Sakshi.
00:25:44.453 --> 00:25:52.304
The witness, we become aware of everything we do as if separated to the doing and that is yoga itself.
00:25:52.701 --> 00:25:58.070
With jnana, we create the oneness between the knower and the known.
00:25:58.601 --> 00:26:05.330
And what we have been discussing in this episode today is mostly about the jnana aspect.
00:26:05.730 --> 00:26:13.671
Once we understand that the knower, which is awareness or consciousness, And that is who we are.
00:26:13.971 --> 00:26:17.840
Oneness is very easily seen as the reality of life.
00:26:18.881 --> 00:26:23.044
The known is any object whilst the knower is the subject.
00:26:23.465 --> 00:26:35.246
Gyan allows all objects to cease as separate individuals and the knower is the one that brings light to all things known and is the underlying reality within them.
00:26:35.365 --> 00:26:40.326
Therefore, the yoga of gyan is where awareness alone remains.
00:26:40.657 --> 00:26:48.617
Then dhyana or raja yoga or meditation is when we create a oneness between the observer and the observed.
00:26:48.897 --> 00:26:53.817
In meditation, we may have an object to focus on or we may not.
00:26:54.397 --> 00:27:03.337
But say that we use an object that can be a light, it can be a murti of one's favourite deity, it can be a guru.
00:27:04.238 --> 00:27:56.711
We need to have a single pointed focus on this object and we observe it with complete attention and then we suddenly turn on itself and we see the observer then the observer becomes the object and that space in that moment is consciousness or pure awareness and then the observer becomes the observed or simply we become aware of awareness itself In this moment, there is a deep immersion in meditation and there is oneness with all that is and this is yoga when all individuality collapses into the ultimate reality and that is samadhi where there is no images, no forms, not even emptiness, just pure awareness or formless awareness alone.
00:27:57.932 --> 00:28:01.701
So as we continue to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.
00:28:02.217 --> 00:28:12.436
Remember, the asanas or postures are just one aspect of yoga, but there is much more to yoga as you have seen from today's episode.
00:28:13.086 --> 00:28:23.257
It is about knowing what you are, and realising it, integrating with it, becoming it, and simply just being it, because that is your true nature.
00:28:24.376 --> 00:28:36.652
As we celebrate these landmark days, we may use it as an opportunity for our liberation while we are alive and this is Yoga for aspiring Jivan Muktas.
